Nice. But which one renders faster? Transluent plane in front of area light vs emissive plane using gradient texture?
Both methods don’t seem to affect render time much

I’m wondering if this same effect can be achieved with IES lights? As in, the lamp alone, without the diffusing plane. I’ve tried to research soft lighting techniques, and oddly I can’t find much, other than your tutorial (which is great!).
I think IES lights might only work with point lights so even if they could work for soft lighting they could not be applied to area lights.
