Lightsaber

Well, you’ve probably already seen enough Star Wars stuff for one lifetime after May the fourth, but for the few people who like custom lightsaber designs, here’s one that I made in about 30 minutes.

Looks really cool! Here’s mine:

…That looks 20 times cooler than mine. Why did you have to make mine look bad? =P
Looks like you spent a lot more time on the render, I kind of just created extremely basic materials and rendered in cycles, even used the default lamp. I’m not very good with materials, but I really just didn’t even try.

Hey,
Yours is really cool too! Mine took like 8 hours so…xD. I like your design a lot! Try rendering using cycles and use a node setup starting with a basic diffuse/glossy mix. Try adding some more buttons. It’s all in the details!
Anyway, cool renders! Lightsabers are so fun to make.

I did render it in cycles, but I didn’t use nodes for the materials just because I didn’t feel like it. =P I did have to use nodes though to make the blade glow. I’ll probably make some more and spend a bit more time on the materials and render, but for this one I just liked the model I made. I’ll probably keep posting on this thread, we should make this the official lightsaber thread. =D

Both of you have inspired me to create my own lightsaber design!

Awesome! Feel free to post it here when you finish it. I’ve already developed a habit of going back to this thread to stare at the pretty lightsabers for several minutes at a time, so more lightsabers would be awesome.

Thought I’d spend a bit more time on this one… As you can see, that didn’t happen. The urge to create lightsabers at a rapid rate is just too powerful.

Hey, that’s real neat, the handle looks like a flaming torch. Here’s mine:

Those look pretty awesome.

I highly recommend for anyone making lightsabers in blender to watch the 2nd part of CGGeek’s Lightsaber tutorial (both parts are good, but the first is modeling so…we like to come up with our own designs, don’t we?:)). His node setups and compositing are great. Check it out!

Also, I wanted to tell guys about this cool thing I found: Connecting a voronoi texture to the the material displacement! If you set it to cell, and put the value somewhere between 1 and 10000000000000000000000, you get a really cool effect! I used it on my last lightsaber hilt (the one with the green blade). Try it!

That does look pretty cool. It looks kind of like the metal was chipped away a bit, so that’s probably better for an old-looking lightsaber. I did a similar (but much more subtle) effect on the last one I uploaded here, I just used the voronoi texture to the glossy shader’s roughness.

That’s a really cool idea too! Trying right now…

Awesome!

Huh, the effect actually seems to make it less subtle on yours. Its a good look either way.

I didn’t spend much time on the modeling or textures on this one, mostly just wanted to make an unstable blade effect. I did that using a displacement modifier on the blades.

Cool one! Kylo Saber for the win xD!
Try turning emission up a ton on the blade. I think the center should be 100% white. How have you been creating the glow?
I do it with fast gaussian blur nodes and glare nodes in the compositor. If you set the Material Index to 1 for that material you can specifically blur it, and make some really awesome effects.
Anyway, another really cool lightsaber!

I’ve always tried to make the center just a little bit colored, but still pretty close to white. I think its kind of just a matter of preference, I’ve seen it done both ways. For the blade’s glow, I also used gaussian blur nodes. On the green lightsaber that I made, I used two different blurs to make it kind of layered. It turned out good, but I was kind of just too lazy to do it again. I also use a node to make the color darker on the glow.
