LightWorks becomes Open Source.

Hey all,

Just heard of this news, it seems that Lightworks an NLA video editor is going open source, could form a good work flow with blender for film VFX.

EditShare Lightworks

“…features including: true shared projects, instant save, multi-cam ingest, 3D editorial functionality, Universal Media File support, native RED editing, native 2K support with DPX and RED, dual outputs, and a format-independent timeline.”

Won’t be available until Q3 of this year though.

there was already a thread about lightworks a few days ago. but for some strange reason it was moved to the game engine support and then to the “other software” support forum o.O

imo its very big news that such a professional software becomes opensource (though ive never heard of this software before but as its the first high end non-linear video editing software over 20 years old and used in a lot featured movies it seems to be very professional) and therefore very worth an own thread in the news section.
cant wait to try it when its available for download

so, ehm, is there any clue in the text on WHY they want to do this? I mean if it’s really a leading software there’s no sense in making it open source… I just don’t understand their motivation…

From the looks of it EditShare is a hardware provider for video editing content, they offer rack units etc, and since EditShare has just acquired Lightworks, perhaps they are releasing it as open source to attract more customers to use their hardware.

EditShare apparently acquired LightWorks. Their motivation for open sourcing may be that LightWorks really isn’t in line with their core mix of products. In any case, this is good news for the community because it will eventually put a high-end video editing tool into the hands of animators and movie makers. I used the word “eventually” because it wasn’t clear to me from EditShare’s press release whether the open source version will be a complete product or just the code for the LightWorks engine.

but even if this was just the engine, wouldn’t that be just the same as the full version? I mean there will be loads of people modifying it until it’s better than the original, at least I would be one of them (as far as my limited coding can be of help), so I am pretty sure they are going to release a complete product.

kiriri, what EditShare is doing is undeniably a very good thing for the open source community. The press release was a bit short on detail (What kind of license will be used, extent of the release, etc.) so it’s hard to say exactly how long it will take for an open source version to get into our hands. One thing is nearly certain: this will cause interested Windows users to go to a dual boot configuration because, at present, LightWorks runs under Linux.

Linux!? damn, I’ll just have to grind on with pre-alpha VLMC

This is great news. I demoed LightWorks, in the early 90’s, it had more potential than Avid, at the time. When Hollywood was making the transition to NLE, most of the first round of films were cut on LightWorks: Mrs. Doubtfire, The Pelican Brief, Blown Away, Speed, Speed 2, Congo, Casino, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Bad Boys, Die Hard: With a Vengeance, Braveheart, Mission: Impossible, Con Air, Twister, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Natural Born Killers, Scream, The Quick and the Dead, etc. ( just a small fraction of credits)

The good news is, we’re getting a free NLE just as good as Avid and has proven itself better, on way more high profile films, in two years than FCP has in ten. LightWorks does need improvement, It’s weak with OMF’s and EDL’s, these are the things the community has to help with.

This is major news for the open source community! one thing that has been missing is a stable, fast open source alternative to things like pinnacle studio, or cyberlink powerdirector. i cant wait to try this out!

Quite interested in this myself. Doubt I’d be able to help move it multi-platform, such as Windows or Mac OSX clients (I’m already stretching myself thin), but from what I’ve seen of it (and the projects it’s been used on) - this is a big bonus for Open Source / Indie film projects working in with digital files (almost all of them now).

where does it say on the website that its only for linux?
(i believe you, but i just couldnt find it…)

People read the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightworks it is for all platforms!
