Linking group vs. model

Recently I noticed a behavior, that I think was different in pre 2.64 releases:
I have a .blend file with different scenes. Into the scenes models from other files are linked in. If I link in an object it appears at the origin and cannot be moved. However if I create a group only containing that object (in the original file) and then link the group into my scene, I can move, rotate and scale the group.
I’m not sure if this is in deed a change in the behavior and if it is so, what is the reason for this.
It also might be something wrong with my scene, however I have no idea what that might be.

If anyone has an idea in one or the other direction, that would be helpful.

I believe linking objects from other files has always behaved this way, but there is another way to get the same effect as linking in a group. Rather than linking an object, you can link the objects data, that way the data will be linked between the files, but you may still move it, scale it, rotate it, etc.

Hope this helps!
