Here’s the deal. I have a dual boot setup on my computer with XP and Mandrake linux 8.2. My setup works great (except for filmgimp).
My kids saw me playing a few games in linux (Tuxracer, Chromium, Frozen Bubble) and wanted to play them. So I set up their computer with a dual boot Win98 and Mandrake. Everything works great except the sound.
They have a Yamaha OPL3 SAx ISA soundcard. I can’t get it to work. sndconfig tries to set it up, but gets an error when trying to play a sound, no matter what settings I tried.
The soundcard itself has no jumpers on it for setting address, irq, DMA, etc…
I took the settings from Win98 which agreed with a website I visited to fix this problem.
Didn’t work.
Mandrake has a configuration tool that recognizes the soundcard and allows me to change settings. The only thing that needed changing was the DMA channels for 8 and 16 bits. Should be DMA 0 and DMA 1 respectively, but are auto detected the other way by both sndconfig and the mandrake utility.
The webpage I went to said this would happen and to manually switch the DMAs . sndconfig doesn’t work no matter what settings I choose. And the Mandrake utility won’t save the changes because it can’t find the isapnp tool. isapnp is installed on the computer.
I have tried several things but none worked.
I need help. I was hoping that all I need to do is to edit a config file. But I don’t know which one, or where. I’ve been looking at How-tos but I haven’t found one yet that has helped.
Help me linux gurus, you are my only hope.
if you have the latests mandrake, it still not working by default… sounds pretty bad. also, I did quick check on groups.google.com and a lot of people seemed to suffer same thing…
so, I would suggest, you get a old SB16 card from a friend… I have one extra, where do you live?
When I use sndconfig it just says an error occured while trying to play a sound.
When I’m inXwindows it says it cannot open /dev/dsp or /dsp/audio, I forget which one.

Also, I’ve been getting the same replies from others about this particular soundcard. I am in the process of getting a SB16 isa from someone.

it might not mean much if you are getting a new sound card but… linux has different kinds of sound drivers out there… I don’t know what mandrake does by default but I think they use the basic OSS sound drivers. It’s a rather outdated standard and such. You might try to use the alsa drivers… http://www.alsa-project.org . Last I heard mandrake had some funny business up with it’s kernel headers, but that is probaby fixed by now.
what rf suggest might be your answer… I’d check if I have OSS or ALSA… In your case ALSA is a better choice…
Ohhh I would also check (out of curiosity…) if my kernel has the apropriate drivers for my soundcard installed as modules… You never know… sometimes strange things happen during installation…

hmm… this might not be the problem, but sometimes I have weird thing when my wife logins and then I login… some of the devices get owned by my wife, and when I then login, I cannot use them (no permission)… so I have to change ownership as root…
this happens to sound and video drivers.
but I’m pretty sure you have tried playing sounds as root? so it’t not permission problem?
