liquid animations w/ metaballs???

Greetings,
I want to make some abstract liquidy type anims using metaballs. But every time I try to set a key for a duplicat it changes the Lock on the original. I have know idea on how to properly animate a group of metaballs. Help?

maybe they share the same IPO. make each of them single user to solve the problem.

another possibility is to use one metaball parented to a particle system, with “Dupliverts” enabled on the particle system. using the new collision and force-fields some good effects can be achieved.
