Loading a Background Image

I don’t know why but for some reason, I can’t load a background image. I go to the transform panel and check background images. I click open and find the file. It didn’t work. I even went to the UV/Image Editor panel and clicked “Open image” and went back to 3d view and tried to load it from there and it won’t show.

Help?

press 5( orthographic mode ) in your numpad then 1( front view ), 3( side view ) or 7( top view )
