I’m doing a locket for the old ball and chain and I’m sorta stuck on a few things that I honestly don’t know how to solve. This is the pic so far.
I removed thi pic that’s supposed to be there so ignore that blank space.
What I need some input on is this:
I wan’t to be sure it is atleast close to bing photorealistic, It’s not incredibly important but it would be nice. So I need to know what you think is missing. Of course the scratch comment will come up but I am no wiz at photoshop so I’m having some trouble on creating a nor map with scratches. Not sure how to begin there really.
Is the gold Ok? Any ideas on what I should add there.
Rendering tips. For this render I’m using a skydome hdri. I know there are stuff like focal blur I should use but I don’t know how to achieve that. Also I know there are some yafray settings I’m missing because If you look closely you can see that the reflections are grainy on the chain and stuff.
More rendering stuff. How does the photons in the full GI settings work. Should I use that so I can get caustics and if so how do I set that up? I’ve done som tests but I can’t seem to get any effect.
And of course C&C on the modelling is also appreciated
The gold seems a little too bland to be a gold color. The deck texture should of course be higher resolution, seeing as I can tell in certain areas that it is indeed being resampled to fit. The gold material seems a bit plasticy, rather than metallic.
My biggest complaint is that your chain is way to short for a locket necklace. If that chain fits around the average neck with very little slack that locket would be huge, a little too deep and would press heavily on one’s wind pipe.
Also The chain looks too stiff after it goes thru the loop on the locket. It should fall due to gravity. It looks like its a stick. Maybe add a slight curve to that part.
I’d suggest to model the plank of wood individualle, then assign the texture separatly to each of them. Just rotate and tweak the texture a bit for each plank…you’ll be able to get higher res with the same texture and have each plank look different. It will make the whole thing look better imo.
Also, you’ll definitly want a bit of DOF effect. Not too extreme because it will make the necklace look too small, but the dof will add to the photorealism.
Yes my biggest complaints are on the tones of gold… seems a bit too green to me.
and the chain… definatly way too stiff. not only by the loop of the locket but all around. It remains straight and even across all the dips inthe wood planks and is most noticable at the top of the chain as it crosses the middle, a couple links should pile into the divits betweent he wood instead of gliding magically across them.
all else fails get a real chain and see how it lays across various items.
Select your camera. Edit mode (F9). Hit ‘Limits’ in the camera tab. This will show the field of view. Then use the ‘Yafray DoF’ tab to change the DoF distance and the aperture.
The gold looks a bit odd, yes, should be a bit more orange than green/yellow.
And I also think it’s way too reflective, not many gold necklaces reflect that much of light. Nor do they really reflect their surroundings that much, in necklaces at least. Well, depends on the gold and how it has been handled really, but it still looks way too odd as they never really reflect in that way. It detracts from the realism. So I suggest googling for “Gold necklace” in order to get some pictures about what I mean.
