LOD System without mesh replace?

Is there an LOD system which does not rely on mesh replace?
It would take a while to seperate each model into decimated and normal detail!

I only found a “AutoLOD” adon for blender 2.54 on youtube. It automaticaly generates a new mesh on the last layer. I dont lookt at the code and I know ist not that what you are searching for, but it speeds up your work a littel bit.
