Looking for a Generalist 3D Modeler

Concept of the game

Enlightened is an RPG-adventure video game optimized for language learning. The language learning method relies mainly on the dialogues, quest completion as well as the exploration of the game environment.

While possessing all of the elements of a standard video game (storyline, gameplay, quests, skill acquisition, etc), Enlightened allows players to learn a foreign language by exploring the world around them, interacting with the NPCs in their target language and completing quests. Resources in-game are also provided (grammar explanations, dictionary, personalized word lists, cultural information, mini-games, etc).

Synopsis

Play two characters: Ray and Stone. Ray, a resourceful but indifferent scientist, is absorbed through a portal and finds himself in Aurora, in the city of Luzeria. He starts his journey to find his way back home. In the meantime, Stone, a fearless and determined woman, returns to the past in order to prevent an impending disaster.

They realize however that many secrets ready to shake their beliefs are concealed under the surface. As they emerge, their trajectories begin to deviate…

The team

We are a two-person team based in BĂ©ziers, France.

Laurent is a developer, computer technician and musician. He is self-taught in video game development since 2018. He is in charge of developing Enlightened using Unreal Engine and composes the music of the game.

Samantha is in charge of elaborating the language learning method and creating adequate educational contents for the players. She has a Master’s degree in Korean studies with a concentration in linguistics and is fluent in three languages (French, English and Korean). She also writes the dialogues.

We both work on the creation of the universe of the game (scenario, characters, quests, etc).

Other info

We have been working on this project since Spring 2020. The current version of the game on which we are working started in October 2021.

The game is created with the game engine Unreal Engine and will be available on PC.

In the future, we wish to establish our own video game studio in order to create and distribute our video games.

I think something is mistaken on this post, because after reading it thoroughly it sounds like a paid job but then it is categorised here as a volunteer job. I don’t think anyone would make such big effort of travelling to Beziers regularly if this is just a volunteer job to be honest.

Maybe the author should take a look at this and amend things if this is actually meant to be a paid job opportunity.

This is indeed a volunteer position. We are looking for someone to join our team and be in charge of the visual aspect of the game before the creation of our video game studio. So it is not currently a paid position but will be one eventually. As for the location, we are looking for someone who is close to us geographically.

I am adding this comment to share a photo of the game. There are more photos on the website for those interested.

I agree that this should be a paid position. It sounds to me like one of those 'but you’re doing it for the exposure!’ things.

@BloomingGames if you’re serious about this then you should pay artists for their work, not exploit them for free work.

I don’t know if you saw my reply to Magdalena-GF but our goal is not to get someone to do something for free and then throw them away but to find someone who is willing to join us for the long term. As long as we are not a company, we cannot claim to be able to pay them (just like we are currently doing this for free). But once the studio is created, one of the first things we will do is hire them and pay them for their work.

Yeah, you and every other volunteer position poster always say this  there’s always a paid opportunity just around the corner, all you have to do is prove your worth first! Except there never is actually a paid opportunity. I’m very familiar with the tactics used to get people to work for free, and this is the oldest one in the book

At the very least, if you expect people to travel regularly… actually before I finish that thought, you can’t call something “remote” in this case. Also, this is a ridiculous requirement. There’s no reason for a remote 3D worker to come sit in your office- and since you’re not a “company”, in your own words, you don’t even have an office. Are you asking people to come hang out at your house, for free, on a regular basis??

Back to my actual thought - you should at least be paying for travel reimbursement. That’s the bare minimum here for what you’re asking

The problem is that even if you’re really willing to pay after the “studio is created”, you’re basically trying to work risk free. If everything goes well and you make money, you pay the artist, if it doesn’t go as expected, well, no payment then. You have nothing to lose, but the artist have a lot to lose. So I don’t think this is appropriate in any case.

Will you make them a co-owner of the company, since they’re investing their time - just like you?

With just this phrase, you’ve removed yourself like 99 % of potentials volunteers, and I don’t think I’m even exaggerating…

For me, it’s a 200 mile drive (3.5 hours), costing… about 30 USD of gas (we have a very efficient car luckily!), a 9.5 hour flight, costing 2289 USD, and then a four hour bus ride which I’m not sure how much it would cost- each way. 16 hours of travel each way, at least 2300 USD each way, so if I was doing this once a month, I would be losing 32 hours a month and 4600 USD, for a grand total of 55,000 USD a year. But yeah, this is totally volunteer work

Although, that works out to 143 USD a hour, and if OP were to switch this to a full time position, I’d be making 274,000 USD a year, so maybe I’m writing this off too soon

Yeah sure… in my case, it would be like a 30miles ride (1 hour drive) costing like 10 usd of gas, and a 11hour flight (in the best case) at ~1100 usd one way, + 6h hour train at 125 usd one way which make like 1235 usd, if I can get lucky, the back and forth would cost me around 2200 usd and ~40hours, and this is without the luggages price and taxi for moving in the town.

And this for what? a drink with the team?

and I don’t know what he mean by “coming regularly”, but I don’t think I would do it even if I was at ~2 hour distance one way or more…

I couldn’t do the travel however would be willing to help if total remote was possible. I’m new, this would be a really good learning experience for me. However, my forte is in set and prop design… not people. I have not tried to build a character in Blender… However I do have that program being advertised all over this forum… CC4. I also have IC 8 for animation with facial mocap capabilities (working on full body mocap). Both programs have pipelines into Unreal. You would need to pay for that plugin if it was needed.

I do work full time atm but willing to give you my days off. I would expect something in writing as for any compensation, monetary or for exposure to my company. Also, I do not speak or read French, I would need to deal with someone bi-lingual on your end.

I have samples of some characters at: www.applebitemedia.com - www.applebiteanimation.com. I have some silly animation samples from a year ago here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc_THWc2vkBblGl7aCR9iww/videos

Or… a couple samples for those that don’t click links… LOL

(Characters created from photographs. These are/were real people before modifications)

(current project in progress… not complete)

PM me if interested. (not to hijack this but anyone is free to contact me… looking to break into this side of creation… :D)
