weight painting is something that I feel is lacking in documentation at this time. I found the easiest way to do weight painting is practice. Instead of looking at it as a whole. Break it up into smaller parts and give it a good shot. In weight painting you’re setting up deformation to work kinda like if you were using proportional editing (or at least that what I tell myself).
Take a finger with 3 segments for example. Paint red in middle / blue around it and green at the ends. Then while bending it you are checking to make sure its deforming well. I used to be in the same boat. But weight painting is an art. Just approach it casually. I would at least break it up into pieces for a couple of tests and test what different weights apply to what.
I love the free tutorials, but I have to admit, that the tutorial sets that I have purchased (which is about 9 DVDs so far) They have all been so much more valuable than the free stuff. This is not necessarily because of quality, but quantity. The paid stuff typically takes you through the process, start to finish, unlike the free tutorials which tend to be very piecemeal. They are good, but don’t give the big picture.
