Looking for Feedback on My Character's Head Topology (WIP)






Hey! I’m working on a stylized character’s head and would love some feedback on the edge flow. My goal is to keep it clean and deformation-friendly for animation.
Does this topology look good, or are there areas that need improvement? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, there’s 2 main things that could be improved :

  • The topology is a bit irregular and needs smoothing, especially under the eyes where the additional edge loop makes small, long faces
  • For better deformations, you should get face loops around the eyes and mouth on a wider surface. Right now, with only one loop, you will have trouble animating the eyes and mouth smoothly

I made another version—does this look better or worse? I’ve watched a couple of videos on topology and edge flow, but I’m still really struggling to understand it. Thanks so much for the reply—I really appreciate it!

Looks way better to me, looks like the topology could be a bit more relaxed around the eyes though

Thanks! I hope I made it better this time. In this case, is it better to have loops around the eyes without including the nose (like a mask around both eyes)? For the previous attempt, I took inspiration from these videos:

Hope I didn’t overdo it with the edge loops.

I don’t know much about the character, but :sweat_smile: It’s for animation to form a ring between the mouth and the chin.
Of course, the eyes form the same ring.

But when I look at the current modeling, I think the shape of the ring of the mouth is too small.
In this case, it might be a problem with the animation.

See what’s wrong when you open your mouth using the shape key.
And I think my personal thoughts can reduce the edges around the mouth and eyes a little bit. (Cleaning the edges for animation)

I think good modeling is a criterion for judging whether there is a possibility of a problem in animation or not.
If you don’t have an animation plan, the topology doesn’t matter much.

And all videos are showing the same topology for animation.
