I was thinking about maybe using a image to sculpt the wood grain and then add the color by using a color picker but, there is also mixed white. Maybe i could use a ramp node to mix the color picker color with white? I guess the type of wood is called composite recycle plastic, something like that but, I can only find textures that are like 300x300 . also, I was thinking about looking up decking blueprints maybe that will help with my precise modeling and making a deck look real. only problem is I can only find decks that have horizontal wood framing and now horizontal rails between the post.
here is what i can find, helps with dimensions but looking for horizontal wood rails so i can know the spacing of 7 wood rails horizontal about 20 feet long and 7 rails from top to bottom. I guess I will let array figure it out for me on the spacing
When you want to ask architectural questions, it helps to use the correct terminology, otherwise people won’t know what you’re talking about. Case in point: rails. Rails are the horizontal pieces that connect and help support the posts that are part of the railing. Rail does not mean the same thing as ‘piece of wood’.
At any rate, decking plans are pretty common on the internet, as are dimensions and other information about spacing and so on. You only need look.
I wouldn’t recommend sculpting the wood grain. Unless you are dealing with tree bark or VERY heavilly weathered wood, the grain is rarely three dimensional. Wood grain is mainly a color variation on the finished flat surface of the wood. With time, the variation in the wood hardness that causes the color variation can weather into a slight three dimensional surface texture, but it really isn’t anything that you couldn’t do with a bump or normal map. Lumber yards go to great trouble to make the wood they sell flat.
