I just registered to thank you for the solution. Worked on Mint 19.1
Cheers mate!
I discovered that I was trying to loop select by clicking in the middle of the face, it did not work, then I saw a tutorial that included loop selecting and I noticed that the tutor was click on an edge. Even though he was in face mode clicking closer to the edge made the loop select work every time. I confirmed this and now have no trouble selecting face loops.
I hope this helps.

If you want to keep “emulate 3 button mouse” enable, you can select an edge loop by double clicking on it
If you use a graphic tablet, an usefull tip, rather than enable emulate 3 buttons mouse, is to configure your pen’s button as a middle click
Thank you very much
I use ubuntu with cinnamon desktop, it also works for me
Thank you soooooooooooooo much for that !! (Mint 20 here)
I had trouble with this recently and found that it was because my mesh was triangulated. It worked fine when the relevant faces were converted to quads. Faces with more than 4 sides will probably cause the wrong edges to be selected, or an incomplete set.
Thanks, it worked now!
