Happy Summer of Blender Los Angeles BlenderHeads!

Many of you are likely avoiding the hot weather by Blending under pleasant air conditioning. Or perhaps youā€™re at the beach capturing DSLR textures or HDRIs. Wherever you do your CG / VFX / GameDev, you have to admit, things are heating up in the world of Blender with a 2.79 release and exciting 2.8 developments. The good news is that SIGGRAPH 2017 is right around the corner and so is your chance to meet loads of Blenderheads from around the world, including the Blender Foundation / Institute crew. For our July meeting, we are simply heading to the following FREE sessions (no SIGGRAPH pass required) to learn about the Blender roadmap from the source and to see the excellent work of your fellow Blender artists:

Blender Foundation - Community Meeting
Sunday, 30 July, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm, Los Angeles Convention Center - Room 511BC
Chairman Ton Roosendaal presents work done on the free open-source Blender project in the past year and plans for the year ahead. Everyone is to provide feedback.

Blender Spotlight
Sunday, 30 July, 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm, Los Angeles Convention Center - Room 511BC
In this open-stage event, Blender artists and developers give short presentations to share their work with the audience. Have something to share, submit it here: https://www.blender.org/events/

After the sessions, the group usually finds a local bar for drinks / food to continue into the evening. Make a tentative plan for socializing post event around ~5pm-8pm, to be determined at the event.

More details can be found on our LA.Blend Meetup page here: https://www.meetup.com/Los-Angeles-Blender-3D-Meetup-Group/

Fracture ON!

Great to see some folks at SIGGRAPH! I am in Santa Barbara and heard there was a community forming around here. Where can I get more info on that? Would love to connect. I also travel to LA once or twice a month and would be interested in meeting people there.

-Derek Elliott

o/ Derek. I have been working on the follow-up emails from SIGGRAPH, lolā€¦thereā€™s a lot! Iā€™ll get to you in a few days and make sure to hook you up. In the mean time you can come into our Freenode.net chat room at #lablender and Iā€™ll point out the SB lead when heā€™s online. If you donā€™t know how to IRC chat just go to the browser based http://webchat.freenode.net/ and for channel put #lablender.

Thanks again for stopping by the booth and post here whenever you want. It stays pretty quiet on the responses but a lot of peeps read it and you never know when someone will pipe up!

Hey all, as most of you know Iā€™m on the Fracture Modifier team. We are looking for more peeps to start helping out and learning the system. We are doing some changes to the helper addon and developing a pie menu. If you are a programmer or know a programmer here in SoCal let me know. Iā€™d like to start working with them and getting them up to speed with the Fracture Modifier py and/or C/C++ code. This is a huge opportunity for anyone wanting to be a tech artist or a programmer for the VFX industry. We have some advanced algorithms and techniques in the FM and it is very well respected in the VFX community. Just PM me if you are interested or know someone who is. Thanks! And as alwaysā€¦
Fracture ON!

SHOWCASE MEETING NOTE:
The day, time and location of the showcase has changed. The original post has been changed to reflect the new information.

These changes have been made so our meeting will coincide with
Innovate Pasadenaā€™s Connect Week 2017.

The Fracture Modifier team is proud to announce the release of our blender 2.79 based Fracture Modifier build. Itā€™s a popular blender branch and has been used in films, game cinematics and TV productions for destruction visual effects.

It has grown to be more than just a fracturing tool and has become a feature-rich destruction creation and shard constraint management platform that interacts seamlessly with Bullet Physics. Newly added bending metal, deforming plastic and fake cloth in addition to blenderā€™s new shadow catcher feature make it a good choice for visual effects work.

The updated Python helper addon that is included automates some workflows and assists new users with advanced simulations made easy. The popular automatic smoke/dust/debris system is now driven by blenderā€™s dynamic paint tool. Along with new automation and workflow improvements we added a pie menu.

Additional features that give artists tools for experimentation and fine tuning include autohide for glass cracks, trigger/untrigger for shard movement control, wood type splintering, and improved convert to objects and keyframes for exporting.

The Fracture Modifier build and addons are 100% Free/Libre Open Source Software based on blenderā€™s official release.

For more information and download links go to http://df-vfx.de/fracturemodifier or search for Fracture Modifier documentation on wiki.blender.org.
