lost data

I just lost 3 hours of work thanks to a missing unsaved quit confirmation, auto save not working with windows 7 / Blender 2.69 and me not knowing about quit.blend. I feel much like changing to another software right now … so if someone can change this, please do.

You didn’t save once in 3 hrs ? If that’s the case it’s difficult to have any sympathy for your situation.

As you are using windows did you not enable the ‘Prompt Quit’ option in User Preferences / Interface

Maybe you should for peace of mind if you are not happy

by default blender has autosave every 2 minutes !
check user preference file section!
if it has not been changed

so check you temp folder there should be a file there!

That’s what i thought too, so i wasn’t as careful as i should have been. It is enabled and set to every 5 minutes, but it doesn’t work. Apparently some problem with Windows 7 folder creation.

Why would i keep pressing keys when the software tells me it is doing it by itself anyways? Also my system runs stable. I lost data exactly once in my life before Blender, when there was a city wide power failure and was able to recover most then. With Blender i probably even lost data without being aware, because of just closing the window.

I did, as i had trouble with this before. However when i updated the version i didn’t find it where i expected it and didn’t look into it further. I know, that makes it part my fault. As a simple safety fix, how about keeping 3 quit.blend files? With just one it already fails if someone has 2 projects open, like i had. Also it would make sense to have to quit prompt enabled by default, at least on windows, as it is the expected behavior.

on file window
there is a path for the temp folder check if you can find something there

but I checked and i did find many blender files!

I don’t remember loosing a file for a long time!

normally I also save under a different name to keep some of the work I did before
just in case I need to come back and redo certain things

I found all that when i tried recovering my work.
In the folder there is quit.blend and copybuffer.blend, both of which are of the wrong project. No other blender file at the path, yet the auto save setting is enabled. I don’t know why that is.

The bottom line is everyone should double check it works for them and as it can’t be relied upon the other safety measures should be improved.
Just saying. I learned my lesson and wont bother you guys anymore.

Immor is beyond my help but there are other reasons when using Blender to save frequently (undo stack, I’m looking at you). It’s no use saying that you don’t have to do this in other programs - there’s no comparison because of the amount of data Blender is crunching compared to the amount of data those other programs are dealing with.
What you - as a new user - should do

  1. to get used to the Blender system of linking data, where you don’t have to do all your modeling in a single file, and
  2. Save often. Use and understand Blender’s automatic versioning system using .blend1, .blend2, 'blend3 etc. files. These will not show up necessarily in your fie >open dialog!
