I’m working on some home movies and I was thinking of using the “LOST” effect at some point. There doesn’t seem to be an easy way to do this in AE. I’ve never used a 3D modeling program before, so I am wondering if the someone knows of a tutorial for this, or perhaps at least explain the basics for what I’m trying to do.

I am sure he is. I haven´t watched lost either. Just because you like something you can´t expect everyone else to do =)
However… where is the effect? 
It is just a 3D font rotating towards the camera. With basic blender knowledge it should take you 10 minutes to do something like that.
You got to learn the basics of blender, or simply ask some gentle soul to do it for you, it really is no hassle.
