Lost MyPaint Brushes! Help!

I was trying to clear out the old brushes from MyPaint, so I could just be left with the Classic brushes and the Deevad brushes, really the only ones I tend to use. Unfortunately, when I cleared out my old brushes, I accidently removed the Classic brushes as well, and now I can’t get them back. I tried reinstalling but they don’t show up. They appear to be in the files, but they aren’t loading properly. Anyone know how to fix this?

MyPaint 1.0 has entries saved in (XP) :
C:\Documents and Settings<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\mypaint
or (Vista/Seven)
C:\Users<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\mypaint

MyPaint 0.9 has entries in (XP) :
C:\Documents and Settings<username>.mypaint
or (Vista/Seven)
C:\Users<username>.mypaint

This folder may be responsible of your uninstall/reinstall not bringing back your brushes in the list despite you have them installed.

So try this :
1 - Uninstall MyPaint and delete the directory that may be left behind
2 - Delete the mentionned ‘mypaint’ folder in your user/local setting (or move it somewhere safe in case you want to re-use it later)
3 - Install MyPaint and add your new brushes

Well I tried that but I still have the same problem. The brush pack called Classic, not to be confused with 08-classic, came installed with it, but now is gone. I can’t seem to find the link anywhere.

Oddly enough, a pack called classic, with a bunch of .myb files seems to be the brush pack, but they aren’t loading properly! I tried compressing them into a zip folder (since that’s how you add additional brush packs, as zips) but that didn’t work either.

Very odd, because MyPaint store its configurations files only in the main directory and in the user/local settings/appdata/mypaint folder
If you removed completely both so you can make a clean reinstall , i don’t see how it’s possible for your bad configuration to be restored at launch and still removing that default brush package .

Maybe ask on the MyPaint board, it’s a bit dead but who know maybe someone will notice and know what’s going on.

I wasn’t able to fix it, but I think the Deevad4 pack will be able to suit my needs alright. It has a lot of the same functionality.

I’m interested to see what the upcoming 1.1 version is like, once it’s made available on Windows.

Try this.

Go to
C:\Documents and Settings<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\mypaint\brushes
or
C:\Users<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\mypaint\brushes\

depending on your OS (XP or Vista/Seven)

You will see a file named “order.conf” , open it with any kind of text editor.
It starts with

this file saves brush groups and order

And each brushes groups with the corresponding brushes are listed there.

If the “Classic” brush packages has disappeared from your MyPaint , these entries should NOT be there :

Group: classic
classic/pencil
classic/charcoal
classic/dry_brush
classic/rounded
classic/knife
classic/smudge+paint
classic/ink_eraser
classic/blend+paint
classic/modelling2
classic/modelling
classic/marker_fat
classic/marker_small
classic/kabura
classic/pen
classic/slow_ink
classic/pointy_ink
classic/brush
classic/textured_ink
classic/ink_blot
classic/coarse_bulk_3
classic/coarse_bulk_2
classic/coarse_bulk_1
classic/short_grass
classic/long_grass
classic/bulk
classic/calligraphy
classic/puantilism
classic/puantilism2
classic/impressionism
classic/imp_details
classic/imp_blending
classic/wet_knife
classic/blending_knife
classic/smudge
classic/blur

I tested myself and deleted those entries from my own order.conf and indeed the whole Classic brush list disappeared from the MyPaint menu.

From there, to get back the Classic brush list entry, at the top of the file, just -after-

# this file saves brush groups and order

Copy paste the following
