Low brightness of selections in edit mode

Any discussions about the dim grid are simply ignored by the developers, they literally ignore the fact that without any newfangled color grids, you always knew that you were editing in Blender 2.7.


That’s how to figure out in such a mess that I’m editing edge? It’s lackluster compared to everything else, do you think the situation is much better with the standard theme? No. Even though I have the maximum brightness set.

And if you turn off X-Ray to 0, you can get lost altogether.

I don’t know which was the rationale behind this - your statement suggests that sb. gave an explanation about it.
Sometimes it’s worth taking the time to understand why it’s considered normal behaviour

To help with readability I’d suggest separating overlapping meshes if the work you’re doing in edit mode is going to be that high-poly (select linked with L, separate by selection with P)
That way you can hide what’s in your way. Alternatively, hiding loops also works in edit mode (H to hide, alt H to unhide all)

I’d argue that both examples (2.79 and 4.5) are equally unclear, aside from your last example, but that’s more so due to different mesh densities–
I’m not sure what benefit having multiple intersecting meshes visible serves

wireframe color set to random with x-ray to half as well as retopology mode can help with visibility in such unfortunate mesh situations.

Quite frankly the difference is meaningless. Or i dont get your point and you think it’s also not appropriate even in 2.7?

Is there a reason you chose a bright background?
A bright background is distracting.

The theme isn’t designed for bright backgrounds.

Even when using an Guide Image as a background, I intentionally avoid using bright colors.

In wireframe view, it’s very complicated when the back surface is visible.
However, if you don’t use back surface view (X-ray mode), the edges are easy to identify.

You can also adjust the wire frame color and other settings in the theme.
You can adjust the theme settings to achieve your desired screen layout.

I’m not sure if this is a question about Blender 2.79 or Blender 3.X or later.

The reason you’re having trouble distinguishing between selected lines in the workspace is because you’re using edges.
Modeling in Edge View is often difficult to distinguish.

By default, use Vertex in the workspace and use Edge when necessary.
If you’re using Edge instead of Vertex, use Edge if Vertex selects an unwanted edge.

I’ve updated the theme and added comparison images from one angle. Blender 5 and earlier versions up to 2.8+ have a grayish tint, which reduces the brightness of the selections.

It seems pointless to set both programs identically.
The basic differences between the two blenders, without any changes, are as follows:

That is not a view. It is a selection mode. It was done to be used.
It should not be difficult to use.
But Vertex selection mode is not displaying edges better, it just adds an overlay for vertices.

The whole point of Wireframe mode is to avoid to see any surface, to select, through mesh, back elements. So, easily perceiving back elements is the interest of Wireframe mode. It is almost like Fading should be inverted.
Disabling Faces overlay, to keep only edges, does not change the fact, that edges from backsurface are less contrasted, whatever is the color of the background of 3D View.
Indeed, only ways to influence that is to enable Retopology overlay (created to be used in Solid mode) or to disable all overlays.

People complained in early days of 2.8. They stepped back until 4.4 and overlay-next project.

Since 4.4, back edges are less contrasted, more fused in background.
And user has no dedicated setting to adjust or disable that.

It wasn’t a flashy theme, it was just an image on a white background at the back.

But when you overlap two objects in wireframe mode, problems begin precisely because of the additional grayness



I couldn’t verify this because the attached video didn’t play.

Is the issue you mentioned about the gray appearance when multiple faces overlap?
Or are you looking for a more efficient way to view the view?
What solution are you looking for?

Personally, I don’t think there’s a solution for something that isn’t supported in Blender. :thinking:

Regarding the readability issues, Blender 2.8 when it came out attempted to solve the issue by way of changing the opacity of the wireframe based on the angle to the camera among other things.

The details were clearly visible, but that was met with complaints by users who expected a solid mass of unreadable wires because it was how “the industry” chooses to do things and FOSS should not try to innovate in this area, so it was reverted to how things looked in 2.79 and before.

We had a solution that was better than what we have now, and now it might not even be possible to really find something that would please everyone.
