HI all! i’ve noticed that people get really impressed with a low poly model…but what is the advantage of that? Is there something wrong with a high poly count? Because I’ve been trying to model a face, and it has a very high poly count and still sucks.
If a scene has too many polygons in it, it becomes sluggish, so, especially for games, as well as animations, low poly is better than high poly. Blender can now bake the normals of a high poly model onto a low poly one, making it look like it has more detail than it actually has, so, no excuse to get too high poly now. best is to make a base that is reasonably low poly, then duplicate it, add a few levels of multi res or an applied subsurf to the duplicate, sculpt in some details, using the sculpt brush, or just doing it manually, then bake the normals of the dense detailed model, onto the lower poly one. fist however, you must UV unwrap the low poly model, and add an image to the UV coords, so blender has an image on which to bake the normals map.
modeling with less polys is harder, thats why people get impressed with lowpoly work. Nothing wrong with a high polycount except that is prohibitive for animation, and if you want to animate that high poly mesh you will have to make a lowpoly mesh of that to use(even for normal maps).
Try to model a human body in as few polys as possible and you will see.
Thanks guys…I thought that it would ruin my mesh or something…lol
