Low Poly Marine

I saw a this thread on CGtalk I though the concept was cool so i thought id give it a bash as well. Ive not done many low poly characters and wanted to do something id actually finish for a change. The concept is Blake Lowry’s for the game Illumina.

Anyhoo I set my self a poly limit of 3k tris (including weapons, which i will design myself) and currently stands at 2100 ive tried to get as close as possible to the concept. Im looking for crits on the modelling before i rig and texture.

Incredible modelling. I truly would like to crit but I find it really well modelled, nothing to say. I hope the weapons and stuff will look as quality as this.

Well, perhaps the upper lags are a bit too thick, it doesn’t really looks musculared but indeed a bit fat. (Wouldn’t want to make this guy angree though :D.)

Btw, lovely signature. made me laugh.

when you’re done, would you mind posting the .blend file and your techniques? i would love to learn how to model cleanly as you do. My biggest problem with my modeling is unnecessary polys.

thanks,
zach

the crotch looks a little low, and the armpit area could use some more detailing.

great work so far.

Thanks for the replies, ive reduced the width of the thigh a little, moved the crotch up and adjusted the armpits. Ive started on the texturing a bit but im still open to crits on the modelling.

nice work, im not just saying that because i am partial to lowpoly work
(which i am)

Quick update on the head texturing, going better than my usual attempts at texturing.

Good work so far.
But to my mind it is to dark and grey.
You could add some colors (green or blue) and some badges.

Btw are you going to use the model in a game or something?

I dont really agree w/ trichter, I think the color scheme looks great.
And Ya, ur texturing looks very good too, cant wait for the final w/ texturing. Keep up the good work!

I think that a good bump map would set this model far from the rest.

Excellent use of polygons.

How did you model up the hand? (process involved?)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Trichter - Im going to experiment with colours when ive got the basic grey done all over, i do agree though it needs a touch of colour in some places. I started doing this for practise no plans to use in a game. Ill probably put it in the blender model repository when its done.

zog34 - I agree, the thin lines between the armour would look good with bump maps, ill have to see how much time i have.

As for the hands i just started off with a cube an extruded a finger. I adjusted it slightly to get the right shape then duplicated 4 times then more adjustment. After that its a case of filling in the blanks. (Sorry not a very good explanation).

This image might help though.
