Low poly Space Marine

After playing Warhammer Firewarrior on the PS2 I felt the urge to model a space marine!! I found it extremely difficult to find a good graphic of the chest wings and in the end had to make one up using Blender which I then put on my UV map. If anyone has any links to good resources then that would help.

I also put some honours on him but as I know very little about the Warhammer universe I couldn’t really tell you what these are for or what they should say (same with the shoulder images)… Again, any links to useful info might help.

As usual, comments welcome!

Jajks, this marine is amazing.
For inspiration, as a 15 year old I was amazed with these 2cm tall iron creatures that were hand painted by fans and used for RPG’s.
I used to do it myself for a very short while.
There were a lot of Space Marines like this one involved.
I know there were books with team logo’s, histories and artists drawings.
I know Warhammer was involved but I don’t remember much of the other brands.
But I’m sure there is a LOT of info on these suckers.
P

Nicely done.

Textures could be improved to make it look less cartoony IMO. But that is a minor issue with this one.

Really like it.

Me too. But I’m finding that perhaps I’m a little better at making them in 3D than I was at painting… It doesn’t matter if my hand starts shaking or I have too much paint on my brush!

I found a space marine guide on-line. It was only £5 but cost £4 to deliver so I thought I might try and get into the shop when I’m next passing.

Improved how? I’m reasonably good at painting UV maps but get a bit stuck on other effects. I had a bit of specularity on it but it all looked a bit strange when I animated him. The spec would flash up on certain faces when he moved… I figured it was probably because it was low-poly and so removed the spec???

Your textures aren’t bad, I’m just saying that they could look a little more realistsic, (i.e. battle damage, scratches, more colour tones, etc.).

Firstly great modelling (whats the polycount by the way), i think the texturing could be improved by removing the stripy effect you’ve got with the dirt and concentrate it arount the edges more. Try showing places where the paint has scraped of as well as some scratches.

Take a look at some tutorials on how to paint textures for guns, they give good tips on how to paint damaged/worn metal.

Like i said good effort, we dont see enough low poly work around here.

(whats the polycount by the way),
If I’m looking in the right place then 2168, so maybe not that low-poly after all. :expressionless:

I take both points about the texturing but always find it a little hard to texture the edges of things as this is where my seams are…

I “speeded” things up a bit by using the same dirty texture on everything instead of specifying a different one for each part. There’s no cutting corners on this forum! :expressionless:

Space Marines have a lot of different variations so I might have a go at customising one or two soldiers. When I do I’ll improve my texture maps. Thanks!

For other engines, maybe not blender engine is a very good low poly and as I can see it could be even more optimized in some areas, but I really like it

About texture development I only can say that I recommend you the book “The Dark Side of Game Texturing” to improove  … is a great help for me

Nice model, keep working

Awesome. I was thinking about doing one of these myself. I just finished rendering a high poly Tyranid Lictor from Warhammer 40k. You may have seen it here already.

Only crit is the textures. I think there could be some inprovments there. Model looks nice though.

EDIT: If you are looking for some inspiration, you may want to download the PC game demo for Dawn of War. It has a realtime army painter which lets you customize your troops appearance. It makes an excelent reference for texturing and modeling.

Thanks… that’s a great help. I will enjoy creating my own Space Marine army… then I will do the same in Blender… For the Emporer!!! By the way that Lictor thing is amazing. You’ve got the skills!

Thanks! I’ve asked my girlfriend to get it for me for Christmas… fingers crossed!

I’ve changed a few of the textures on the legs… What do you think?

Thats really great modeling, man.

Way better then what I’m capable of doing at the moment.

Two thumbs up.

hey that marine looks really great so far!
i have to say…i’m actually playing these tabletop game “Warhammer 40k”.
the video game is not really a good source for these miniatures so try searching something on this site e.g.

Wah,
if only they had that website when I was 15!
P

Great job. I don’t find anything to critisize.
Great site chop. I ain’t intrested in RPG games but I am going to try to model some figure on that site. Thanks.

That is great overall, and the new textures look even better! One time a saw a tutorial for applying “decals”. Is that how you did the logos and things? Or is it all UV Mapped?

P.S. You’ve made me want to model little toys!

Could you post a wireframe? Awsome work.

Cheers,

Bob

I urge you…no…order you to create a high poly version!

Nice work! As BgdM pointed out, the textures are a little lacking but certainly not bad. Maybe a little higher res? They look a bit blurry in your latest pic.

Awesome model!!! I like it really much. The texturing is really good! Remember me to Dawn of War.

It’s all UV mapped…

Thanks! wireframe available below.

Hmmm… I actually find high-poly modelling a real bore. It takes about three times as long and slows my computer down. I can bang things out reasonably quickly with low-ploy stuff but I’m yet to master the treacherous world of many polygons!

Here are some new images with improved textures:

The new textures are fantastic! Excellent work! 8)
