Hey! I’m working on a project right now where I’m going to have an errupting volcano. I want to know how I can make the lava glow so it doesn’t just look like play-doh spurting out the top of the volcano. Is there some way to make the material actually give off light, or is it the effect just achieved by clever placement of light sources?
you could give it some Emit value in shade panel
or you could also add some glow effect with node compositor

Can you give me a bit more of a step-by-step on how to implement these commands?
for the material you add some emit value in material panel
then go to the world panel and set indirect lighting and below select proximity for the rrender
see pic
see file
hope it helps
Thanks! I’ll give it a shot.
indirect lighting is not in 2.49.
so in other versions this trick doesn’t work.
the file i uploaded is for 2.5 and it’s the only one that have indirect ligthing llike shown in the pic
there is radiosity in 2.49 but far from what you can do in 2.5
you could also have this in yafaray renderer but not available yet in 2.5 may be later this fall
