LuxCoreRender v2.1

People are likely to associate “photons” with old classic Photon Mapping but PhotonGI cache in LuxCore is a quite different “beast”. There is not final gather step like in old classic photon mapping. It is an indirect light cache like in V-Ray or Corona. It can easy take down the avg. rays per samples from 7-8 to 2-3.
I’m also not aware of anyone using Hachisuka’s Metropolis solution to build photon maps (the paper was intended for SPPM) and it makes a HUGE difference in the number of photons you need to trace to get a good result.

Anyway the results will tell us how it works … and, at the moment, they are telling that is like day and night when compared with plain path tracing

i too prefer camera settings tab as default tonemapping -maybe with a autoexposure control.
i feel Gain value in light will be more intuitive if it is just rgb value, if Gain is set to 5,the surface of emitter will give pixel rgb value (5,5,5).- when watt and efficiency is overridden.

Any news regarding an estimated 2.8 release date?

Can’t speak on behalf devs but…
I created trello board where I track development of luxcore regarding main features and big fixes

It’s mostly compilation based on forum posts and github etc…

I did put 2.8 support on timeline with version 2.3 of luxcore, however it depends only on B.Y.O.B. if he finds the time and will to make the port.

Luxcore seems to be the only alternative to cycles that is constantly improving and offering real advancements. It’s really a nice renderer.

I’m working on OIDN integration in the viewport.
The denoiser kicks in when the viewport render pauses.
Below is a demo rendered with Bidir+Metropolis:

What prevents porting on blender 2.8 at the moment?
is not the development of new APIs stable?

It’s a lot of work, and it’s not exactly fun.
Also, we are currently developing some pretty cool new features, like the OIDN integration or the PhotonGI cache. I would have to freeze the whole codebase until the 2.8 port is done. I prefer to do that only once all features for v2.2 are in (when we are in beta phase).
Actually, I had already started the port to 2.8, but I stopped for a while and I think now I have to start over from the beginning more or less.

now I understand, thanks for the reply

I assume that on these occasions, starting from scratch already knowing very well what to do and how to do, probably puts into practice revolutionary insights … and those are funny I think …

I have merged the OIDN viewport integration into master, it will be included in the next alpha version.
New demo recording of this feature, comparing the 10 second preview to a 1000 sample reference render at the end:
