Mac: M3 - *Hardware accelerated RT (Part 1)

I badgered Marvelous Designer on their forum and they confirmed they are developing M1 compatibility which may arrive in a few months. Not sure how much they’ll optimise sims or integrate with Metal, but still a positive development

Watching a few reviews on youtube seem to show that the M1 ultra is only 50% to 66% utilized. You can see it on the wattage and of course on the benchmarks. I think this is more of a OS driver issue that Apple has not released yet. Why they have done this I don’t know.

yes I think something is “wrong” with 12.3

Not about the ultra but still makes you wonder.
And if it affects that one it affects the ultra too

The last time my parents were here my wife asked me why they are fighting
I laughed and explained to her that my parents were just talking.

sadly I dont get the last two lines hahahaha

That would be:

  • M1 Macs
  • Screen Space Reflections (sounds also like “refractions” but in Blender context assuming the former)

I know nothing about the language mind you, but reading it brute force keeping in mind what he was saying about the intonation or the language drove it home.

Yes some words in the german language sound harsch, like Schmetterling.

Could be a name for a hand grenade but it is only a butterfly

OMG I zeriouzly waz not able to zee zat !

Hello guys,
Does anybody have a MacBook Pro 14 (M1Pro) and is from Europe?
If yes, I don’t know if I am the only one, but when I listen on Youtube or Vimeo or Apple TV, on Safari, on the speakers,(music/tutorials) and then I close Blender (while the music is still ON), I get a “pock” noise on the laptop’s speakers. Every time.
This noise does not appear on the headphones on Youtube/Vimeo/TV

Is there somebody who can test and see if it is the same?

Hi, my friend who has the m1 pro MacBook said he has sometimes had this same issue, but very seldom.

I have seen videos of such issues quite some time ago.
(About 2017 pre M1 Macbook Pros ?)

And I noticed that too with my M1 Mini and external speakers.
AFAIK it happens while starting the Mini only.

Koi Wunder, des war au Schwäbisch …

I speak High German

In don’t even know dialect / street slang words form my local area which is North Rhine-Westphalia.

Thank you. I have it always.

So …

if I got that right, for now, the M1 Max Studio is exactly as fast as even the
equivalent specced Macbook Pro 14" !?
And the reason is that currently the 24 or 32 GPU cores aren’t still really used
in a way that Mac Studio could profit from any of its more capable
cooling/timing/voltage ?

Looks like this is not only true for Blender.

$900 more for the portable.
But you get some screen, camera, keyboard and touchpad for free …

So I wonder how much optimization is still needed in Software, macOS
and maybe even M2 hardware to get to a Final Cut optimization level.
And how long this may take.
Looks like Blender is currently Apples playground to develop real world
demands - outside of the video editing bubble ?
Which I think is a very lucky situation for Blender users.

Yes looks like it is exactly the same at the moment, unless you prefer a desktop or have the peripherals the Macbook looks like a better deal.

Or if you find the screen to small and will buy an external screen just get the studio unless you need a MacBook for traveling.

Will Apple tune the Studio different in the next OS update who knows. I think they should but it is not like they ask me or they would have designed a new mouse

Also considering how much of a mess 12.3 is I would not be surprised if some changes are coming.

Well I am glad I did hold off my studio purchase

If the studio is equal to a MacBookPro - I assumed clock speed wat consumption etc would be higher

One optimistic side of this, is both Jason-Apple and Clement have mentioned in the developer forum that Apple is working on a full Metal backend for Blender. So we could very well see a Hybrid Rendering version of Eevee (Metal) before its Vulcan counterpart.
Clement has already said that the Vulcan build for Eevee isn’t coming anytime soon, and if I remember correctly a Vulcan version vs OpenGL is what is needed on the Windows side for Hybrid Rendering; unlike Metal which already has it built in, as seen in the video I shared a few months ago.

It would be a nice surprise to see the Metal branch get the first use case of the latest tech used in Blender… Nvidia seemed to leapfrog past everyone else in Blender when Optix was implemented, which unfortunately is locked down for their cards only, so hopefully Apple could make that same jump.

I totally remember this video, it was amazing. That sent me down a spiral of bunch of stuff that sounded like magic and would be great if used in all things Blender, like some sparse virtual shadow maps where the memory cost (and hence processing speed, loading and unloading) where a fraction of the final resolution.

Was looking at the comments of this video shared above by @Falgor (it was great by the way, it goes through tests beyond just rendering speeds… like scene simulations):

and one of them mentions that Optix is not that reliable for animations? That it introduces glitches? Would be great if those of you that are knowledgeable in the matter could either confirm or deny… it would kinda make sense since denoising might introduce a lot of randomness every time a frame is rendered or not be that coherent one frame to the next but I have no RTXs myself.

Shapr3D a cad software I use and work for just released their own render engine which is a fork of Googles Filament

Interesting is that this is metal ready !

I don’t remember getting any glitches with OptiX (2080ti ar work), but I haven’t rendered a lot with it.
