I remember playing with something similar back on my old iPhone 4 way back when. This is much, much higher fidelity though.
They stated pretty strongly that there is a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon coming…but apparently not quite yet. My suspicion is that they’re buying themselves some time so that people who dumped $15k on their Mac Pro’s a couple of years ago don’t feel like complete idiots.
I am also starting to suspect that the Mac Pro will not have an M1 or an M2, but rather the rumored MX which I suspect would be capable of interfacing with external sources like PCI, and tap into external storage and memory, as well as have more cores and speed overall. In that case, they would stick to the Pro, Max and Ultra configurations that they have embraced. To me that’s the only thing that would make sense and would motivate users to want to spend that extra cash on a tower.
Here is my guess before the Reviews
M2 =70- 80% of the GPU speed of the 16core M1 Pro?
M2 GPU 276-293 in blender bench (my guess considering they went from 2,6 to 3,6 tflops).
M1 Pro GPU 356
M1 Pro is 5,2 Tflops🤔
Might it nearly match my 14core 14” yes ![]()
Also thing it is nice the M2 got a bit more memory bandwidth and can go to 24 GB now.
I’ve been spending all my Mac study time looking more at Studio benchmarks than anything else, so I haven’t heard about that. ![]()
Though if they were to go that route, I wonder how they could add expandable memory without mooting the M1’s biggest advantage over their x86 equivalents. Either Apple will be selling specialized modules designed specifically to fit into some future Mac Pro mobo, or they’ll use standard memory as a kind of slower buffer overflow, for those projects that exceed the usual amounts of RAM provided with the M1’s.
It is all guessing but i would say that the max pro will come but not next week
We just witnessed the introduction of M2 after they just showed the m1 ultra max studio
So who knows what will come
More gpu RAM internal Storage slots etc I feel will be it
True even DDR5 is only 51 GB/s (ok depend on MHz) up to 56 GB/s it seems.
So lets say half of the M2.
The M2 gpu improvements are also noticeable
But still while for film editing the media engines are fine for 3D one needs more gou power.
The other office work related software demos are interesting while it seems Apple is kinda late tip the game
Yes I agree, wonder if the M2 having 10 cores that that mean the Pro will be 20 and the Max 40?
Thought the shared whiteboard is cool, still have not seen Adobe Canvas (which looks very similar) and not out yes so not sure if they are that late with that one.
Also surprised the M2 got no WIFI 6e or BT 5.2.
I thought they might update that but guess not.
The way how Apple apps are right together is fine
Camera continuity is pretty smart
Too bad I bought Camo …
Apples iWork apps are really nice but over a long time lacked much needed updates
And as much as I hate it everybody just either uses word or google docs.
And Miro is my most fav online collaboration platform
Sketching in the Apple tool is much nicer that for sure
I might have to look into it and if it is only mac or pc / web accessible
Also, I note that they have offline shader compilation and mesh shaders. Looks very interesting.
That’s the biggest question really. Perhaps this is why the Mac Pro is not yet here, as they’re still trying to figure out exactly how to give users expandability while retaining everything that makes the Apple Silicon SoC so interesting.
I honestly don’t know exactly how this will work out, perhaps Apple has painted themselves into a corner? Or perhaps they have decided that expandability is no longer something that is necessary the way they see it?
… can be further adjusted when exported into various USDZ-compatible tools, such as Cinema 4D, Shapr3D, or AutoCAD.
no Blender ![]()
Blender can load the usdc file but why not mention the app is odd
I share your view that Apple is still working on the tech.
It now becomes clear why we got the intel macpro / as a buffer.
I don’t think Apple would announce the Mac and then don’t deliver.
While the cpu is good the gpu is not and Apple also is aware of that.
How metal 3 should target games is surprising to me because that was sofar not a big market even for Apple.
However I don’t think that they painted themselves into a corner.
Look when the M1 came out and we all complaint about lack of memory.
Then we got the pro max ultra and now M2.
I would say that they have something in the works and we will see it when it is ready maybe in 2023 ?
They also just released the max studio recently
Mine was finally ordered I hope it arrives soon
The Mac mini ram limitations really are a problem with the photogrammetry work I do recently
I find apples stage view pretty amazing but those takes will drain the phone battery or warm it up a lot
So I am not sure how much I will use that
For that tasks I just bought a Samsung A52 which has a pretty acceptable array of cameras and Camo app runs on android too
Is it just me, or is the excitement close to zero?
M2 chip. but same spec, a bit faster.
No Pro hardware.
Mo macOS on iPad, but iOS with windows.
So what? Apple finally seems to give up on us and focus on laptops and iPads for privat usage.
I will hold judgment on Metal 3 till I watched the development video. There might be a lot of new features besides the 2 highlighted.
Person Jason will answer my question on blender devtalk ![]()
not just you, hoping for M2 pro / max minis or the Mac Pro with M2 Ultra in Q4.
Fingers crossed for RT in the Pro and up.
ipad OS looks like a decent improvement in the right direction.
Also M2 single core will be nice if my guess is correct, probably close to the intel 12900k (if the M2 is actually 18% faster there too).
well I seriously fell asleep during it - but I was also exhausted from the baby
they just came out with the mac studio ultra = jesus christ …
apple always said mac os and ipados will be different - that is kinda clear
but u can see how workflows slowly converge
camera continuity etc are pretty interesting abilities to make iPhone, iPad and mac collaborate together
What I mean is that the very thing that makes this SoC ARM architecture so efficient is also the thing that locks it off from the outside world. It’s basically like a business that is moving outside vendor services to in-house. There are advantages there to be had, but also restrictions.
If one of the primary advantages of M technology is the ability to access memory and storage at accelerated rates while retaining a smaller energy footprint, then those advantages disappear when asked to interface with DDR5 and PCI 4.0 devices.
So perhaps you’re right in the sense that the Mac Pro will be user expandable, but only with Apple devices? I honestly don’t see how Apple squares off the issue otherwise. I feel like the days of ordering more RAM or storage from NewEgg and plopping it into our Macs might be behind us.
The next question then would be – is that really a big deal? Are we all chasing our tails by constantly adding more hardware to our configurations?
If I was doing strict video work, I would have to question if I really do need a 3rd party GPU for instance. Blackmagic Resolve runs plenty fast on a Mac Studio, and using external storage is already the primary m.o. for most editors. The same is true for music/audio applications – the need for additional hardware isn’t necessary anymore.
So then we end up back at the CG and/or other very specific case users. What happens if, let’s say with the new Metal 3 optimizations, Cycles for Apple Silicon achieves a 200-250% increase in speed as it’s been rumored it could be capable of? Does that make 3rd party GPU’s unnecessary for the majority of us?
Yes probably, I still would prefer a different case construction then the Studio (don’t like the fat mini design that much either).
It is dust that worries me a bit, fans are not really user cleanable, has no dust filter.
The Macbook I can at least easily open and clean them.
So please give us a tower that we can open or at least put in a removable dust filter.
Also not sure if Apple would write arm GPU drivers for AMD cards if they want to sell theirs ![]()
As for GPU performance if the M2 generation is really 38 % faster and Blender gets better it will be fine.
I am definitely looking forward to seeing M2 Pro, Max and perhaps Ultra end of the year.
