Mac: M3 - *Hardware accelerated RT (Part 1)

There are problems mit digital dashboards

Mainly while driving you cannot touch where a dials is

Hands free driving would be more voice activated and those have fun with accents

I cannot imagine Apple really trying to make a car - maybe a fully autonomous car - who know.

ā€”-

I read more that did center stage Apple limits this to the m1 iPads because of memory and cpu power.

This a little lame as an excuse - considering that android phones can do something similar since a long time.

It is a little concerning that this type of interoperability is limited to a tiny fraction of the iPad segment

Or maybe in the future newer iPads can do it too

I think I will agree with some youtubers on that one that is is just ā€œartificialā€ to sell more M1s.

The Apple silicon dev kit was an was an A12z and it could run full Mac Os.

I donā€™t think there would s a good reason that it would only work on M1s.

Perhaps they will backtrack like some feature from Monterey that were not supposed to work on Intel Macs and in the end they did.

Possible - I am not sure if it is artificial to increase sales - I have the feeling it is less the window manager system but more dealing with how the iPad connected to an external display then runs two different displays on one gpu

that could make sense.

I saw there was some movement on that magical 40% speedup patch. although I donā€™t know if its actually any closer to getting accepted? https://developer.blender.org/D14645?vs=52474&id=52475

How can you tell there was movement?

You gotta scroll quite a bit down to see the updates

Saw that, I wonder if this has any impact on performance or is just for ā€œdebugā€.

With Blender but wait that is no Mac Studio display

Itā€™s hard to understand from the various posts what is actually going on. I guess weā€™ll just have to wait and see, and one day Cycles will be magically almost twice as fast as the day before!

I think that will take a while especially when I see this in the Cycle optimization from Jasonā€¦

I also updated the benchmark numbers in the patch description. Unfortunately itā€™s lower than before which is something Iā€™d like to investigate:

  • Jun 15th: monster, classroom, junkshop = 429, 208, 270 (M1 Max, macOS 12.x)
  • Apr 14th: monster, classroom, junkshop = 469, 234, 303 (M1 Max, macOS 12.x)

https://developer.blender.org/D14645

Do you know how we review the split values of Blender benchmark? i only have the total valueā€¦

I think it tells you at the end on the benchmark, I can check in a bit when I get home.

Yeah it did, but i only took note of the whole score .I did the benchmark about a week ago.

I canā€™t help myself, I am quite disappointed by the M1.2,
officially called M2.

More die area and transistors, higher power consumption and
frequency and higher memory bandwith. For CPU cores that looks like
there isnā€™t any noticeable improvement from A14 vs A 15 architecture IPC.
For the GPU they hide lack of innovation by adding 25% more cores.

If I would do Videos, I could at least hope for the decoder accelerators.

And that is a next M generation after 18 months.

Intel had 20% IPC gains lately (for reasons) by only using slightly more power.
In the past 2007- ā€¦ Intel, without any competition had 15% gains per cycle at max.
Apples A chips progressed much faster at that time, to where they are now and
at one point could overtake X86 in power.

At the current pace of AMD and Intel (and Nvidia for GPU only), Apple risks
to lose their leap with ARM and fall behind again in a few years.
I hope that is unlikely and current paces are a bit extraordinary - but I am
still very disappointed.

Together with the fact that in reality their current higher M1 portfolioā€™s
power doesnā€™t even manifest/scale in Apps.

Please Apple do your job, before the small M1 era where I was confident
that I can finally do 3D work again with Apple in the near future will
diminish in doubts again.

Apple are dominating Intel and AMD and will continue to do so. Intel are so scared, they are looking to TMSC to fab some of their chips. Also, expect the next M3 to use a feature size reduction, which will provide quite an improvement in speed and efficiency.

I am having doubts to especially as we will probably see Raptor Lake (Intel) and Raphael (AMD) this year.

If this is true and power draw is ok damnā€¦
Intel Raptor Lake Core i9-13900 ES CPU Up To 50% Faster Than Alder Lake Core i9-12900 At a Low Clock Speed of 3.7 GHz (just imagine if that runs at 5 or 5,5 GHz).

It is not looking much better on the GPU front but I am not holding my breath for Nvidia if the power draw is true but Amd sounds promising.

RDNA3 would increase over RDNA2 with 50% generational performance/Watt increases.

Apple woke the Giants now lets see if they can keep up. Honestly starting to think Apples 18 month cycle might be a bit too slow.
Depending on how the rest of the M2 line is and if they donā€™t release the M3 next year not sure how things will look then.

Just saw thisā€¦

So 9 % higher clock speed nearly and 20 % faster oh well. If they really pulled that off at exactly the same power draw I still will be slightly impressed but we will see perhaps when reviews hit (for the cpu).

Very unlikely with what numbers they showed on WWDC.

Either M3 proves the opposite (again another year ) to prove that
all they did right with their M1 will realistically continue, or for me it
will be remembered as a one hit wonder.

M2 Macbook Air is great, even today M1 MBA considering the costs
and the target group. But WTH is the M2 MBP 13" ?
What is so difficult to develop and announce a Mac Pro ?

What was so difficult to announce and release ā€œthatā€ current 2019 MP
at a reasonable timeframe.

My M1 Mini is absolutely great for 90% of the target group.
Never expected to use it for other than testing but in the end still
limited for real CAD and 3D work.
(other than Video and 2D Graphics testers promised)
Still donā€™t know really if a maxed out Studio would really solve these
obvious limitations in numbers - when seeing the bad scaling of the
M1 Ultras.
I donā€™t even now for sure if M2 will fix that potential (very likely) problem
with that too small graphics cache.

Or if I would buy one of the meanwhile available reasonably specced
M1 Ultra Studios (20 CPU, 48 GPU, 1 TB SSD, 128 GB shared memory)
would finally scale by App improvements.
I bet on that once with my dual D700 Trash Can and it took 9 years
(Blender Cycles uses both GPUs and is faster than my M1 - Yeah !

Iā€™ve noticed Apple does everything very calculated. Actually if you take in all the factors they offer itā€™s exactly the price itā€™s worth.

Letā€™s face it. They could make a power hungry beast that the fans would wake your neighbours. If they did that I wouldnā€™t buy Apple. I would buy windows.
