Mac: M3 - *Hardware accelerated RT (Part 1)

Yes, a pity, but I am not really into freecad.
But saw some nice works of forum members e.g. from
Latin America which seem to build houses with freecad.

For me it looks a bit like freecad is still at Blender 2.3 level.
I wish it would have the same attention as Blender has today.
And all of latest blender UI/UX progress.

It is not about Blender devs skills. They are great and Cycles/Eevee integration is absolutely unique in 3D apps world.
The priority is given to the Windows version because it is the most popular, followed by Linux, although it is the least popular - this is a matter of religion.
Blender Institute wasn’t too interested in the Mac version. They were forced into the job by Apple, which practically does most of the work.
Blender Institute is a very small “company” and doesn’t have the resources of the big commercial companies. Note that the developers at Blender Institute don’t even keep up with checking the patches sent by Apple.
So this is more an organisational issue, not a devs competence issue.

From what I read one some cards the chips are memory chips are not always cooled to well and are the first to go.

Perhaps that is why the Blender foundation is looking to hire an Mac developer.

You make it sound like Blender devs don’t give a flying shit about MacOS users, even though they represent at least 10% of the Blender user base and likely number in the tens of thousands. I don’t believe that’s the case, and I do think that the BF sees a great deal of potential in the new ARM architecture.

I also suspect that due to the support for Apple Silicon and now Metal there is a high probability that the Blender MacOS user base is poised to grow.

Don’t get me wrong - what they have achieved is impressive

But I think it is also fair to say that blender foundation and how blender is developed seems to me to be very unusual in the foss area

Yes, this is great news. It is something unthinkable not so long ago. However, we are talking about one developer. ONE. The reality is that an experienced Mac/GPU/Swift/C developer can make a lot of money in many places.

I have a different opinion. As I wrote earlier – in my opinion Apple forced the Blender Institute to work on the Mac version by taking on most of the work. Although a cooperation has been announced, there is still no Apple logo in the list of sponsors. This is a very good and clever Apple move. If Apple had paid money directly to the Blender Institute, it would have been probably wasted on the Windows/Linux crap versions. Apple has thus not only taken care of the development of its platform, but has supported the sustainability of Blender and prevented the Blender Institute from harming itself by spending Apple money pointlessly. Glory to Apple!

Apple is contributing to the development fund, they just chose not to have their logo show in the list:

I think the main problem of FOSS was the long time lack of UI/UX competence
and ignorance of being something important. Followed by some lack of features.
Blender was similar in the past but really exploded when this was addressed.

I think 20 years ago, there would have been a much larger “market” for a FOSS
Photoshop Alternative than for Blender as just another 3D package in a
heterogeneous 3D market.

But now Blender in certain aspects is even better than some commercial solutions,
showing more love to details and more vivid development.
While GIMP got more features but is still behind in UI/UX and standards.
That is what i call a pity.

Maybe that is Ton’s successful leadership, similar to Linus keeping Linux together.

Yes I think this is in part also because of Ton guiding the development.

Each time I opened Gimp and loaded a bigger image saw the sluggish performance and uninstalled it.

Today with Affinity there is also again a super affordable alternative to adobe.

I think you’re making your own point!

Yeah finally need to share

Good timing - in my recent photogrammetry tests the 8tm ram Mac mini just runs out of ram.

Going to have the best 4th of July ever lol

You can play with your new computer. Me? I intend to celebrate the independence of my country by blowing up a good chunk of it with illegal fireworks.

I might also grill out some hotdogs.

Sounds like a beautiful evening too.

I am really curious when I finally buy a M1 Mini replacement.
2023 or 2024 ?

M2 Mini Pro, M1 Studio anyway or better M2 Studio, again a large iMac
and or iMac Pro rumored, just a M2 MacBook Pro or a mortgage for
a Mac Pro M2-3 …
Depends on if the Studio Display will come with Mini LED and variable
frame rate but at a reasonable price ($1200) and of course on the first
M2 Pro/Max/Ultra/(Extreme) benchmark results …

A yes, I also need to wait for the next software release of Vectorworks
if there may be any further optimizations for the next native ARM version
and if Bricscad and Twinmotion will finally get an Apple ARM version in
November - or not …
And of course the Blender Cycles (and Eevee) benchmarks …

Perhaps sooner than you think? That is if the next M2 are 3 nm and the make an M2 Pro mini?

While the improvement from M1 to M2 was decent, it could be great if the from the M1 Pro to the M2 Pro.

Yes, I read the rumors.
Makes me even more unlikely to buy a Mac Studio, although they are
reasonable available now.

Were there any noticeable improvements in Blender Alphas with
Apple ARM lately ?
I was distracted and haven’t even had time to try any new Blender
versions since some weeks now.
(Or if anyone saw some progress in installation reliability with the
BlenderBIM AddOn ?)

The way I see it, if at least two people don’t lose at least one finger, then it wasn’t a proper 4th of July.
