Mac: M3 - *Hardware accelerated RT (Part 1)

Works great on both my M1 and Intel hackintosh. Haven’t dug into it too much yet as far as render speed and optimization. I really love the Octane look, main issue is having to reconvert all the materials since it’s not Cycles compatible.

Just to clarify in case anyone wonders: functions like volume shaders and ray-tracing nodes (AO and Bevel node) are not yet implemented in the current stage of Cycles-X. The Windows version also lacks the functionality.

True I tried it on both

ooh they changed something quite a bit… there is a cycles x arm build now too.

And Patch builds, any ideas what that is ?

Yup, it definitely was a welcome surprise to see how well this little CPU is performing.
Now we just need some more cores and an equivalent GPU.
Both of which seem to be slated to drop later this year.

The official Rain animation benchmark I linked to is a nice little test. Glad y’all are taking part and putting up some numbers.

Interesting, I get about 6 FPS in lookdev and 24 fps in solid view on the air (in 2.93 arm build).

Update: 4k usb-c connected screen lookdev = 1fps, solid view 15-16 fps
Update: same display non scaled in the settings about 3 fps and 24 fps in solid view

Ah yes here one from Eevee

So here is my window test.

i7 6700k with AMD 5700 XT

half of 3340 x 1440 (so about 1670 x 1440) = about 12 fps in lookdev
full screen = nearly 10 fps in lookdev

turn camera dof and motion blur and viewport denoising off and I got 17fps full 1440p.
Actually only camera dof seems to make a big difference.

Also turning off camera dof on the M1 makes only half an fps difference.

Guess I’ll post a screenshot up too, since I like doing that.

I’m running at 1440p, by the way. Fullscreening the viewport actually gave me a single digit FPS boost. Go fig.

Try closing the second screen and play either look dev or solid, one at a time, like the example I have on mine.
I’m not animating with Eevee on, only look dev. Trying to run animations with Eevee active has shown to be too taxing even for the burliest cards out there.

And like you notice, turning off DOF doesn’t do much, I just have it off cause running the animation with it that strong makes my brain hurt. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

M1X news from Mark Gurmin: could come with 10 cpu cores 8 performance and 2 efficiency cores with 16 or 32 gpu cores. Cheers. Metal support please… I’m buying the new MBP 16.

Just the fact that there’s a “rumored” redesigned Mac Mini in the works gets me really excited.

The versatility of what devices I can connect and how many keeps me hoping the Mini stays competitive with the other lines and maybe holds the reins as an affordable and slightly less capable Mac Pro.

Saw this article yesterday:

I eagerly read it, hoping for rumors about a more powerful iMac, only to find this vague little bit all the way at the bottom:

“Gurman also reported that Apple has a larger iMac in the works, but it was put on the back burner so that the company can focus on the release of the new 24-inch iMac.”

Haha, it won’t be far, Apple said two year transition, ending before 2022 WWDC it come soon with M1X out.

Yeah, I’ve also still got some hopes for a WWDC announcement regarding new iMacs.

Redshift and Octane actually support M1 gpu rendering, I checked it out. Can someone please try it and give us some performance to expect? Thank you!

I’d also like to read about that.

Go to free trial and Octane X, scroll down to see compatibility with M1gpu

If an Indie version of C4D with Redshift or Octane for freelancers would become available, I’d definitely consider that.

I used to be a 3ds Max user for many years, and if it weren’t for the fact that I’ve planned a return to macOS, I’d be interested to go for the Indie version of 3ds Max.

These have blender plugin

Yeah, but in Blender you can already use Octane for free. I’d only be interested if there would be an affordable complete indie package including C4D. I think C4D would be interesting to work with if the price would be lowered to a freelancer budget.
