Finally had the time to load this one up - I’ve spent ages on this picture and now I’m really curious about your opinions. Of course, the modelling itself may be a little bit hard to judge but I’d need some feedback on the general scene. And please keep in mind that this is really not meant to be realistic
I wanted to make it more detailed but my computer surely isn’t able to handle much more details - I had to split this up into the maximum of 64 pieces with the X / Y - parts feature to be able to render it at a decent size. I guess I still need to learn how to keep the poly count low…
However, even though this involved heavy postpro, I’d be very glad that the some critiques on the mood, the composition, everything…
Thanks in advance!
Very nice results. The perspective of the clouds versus the machinery I’m not sure of, but this is definitely one of the most succesfully done mostly-dark pictures I’ve seen in recent times. A larger render would be great since there are so many details to be seen. There’s a movie poster quality to this.
Economizing polys is generally good practice, and not only for animation purposes, but when you need to go high poly, and if your computer chokes, consider getting a better video card and more RAM. A better video card (i.e. faster GPU and more video RAM) will only make for faster edits in the 3d view (not faster renders) while system RAM will make for better overall render times as the program can handle higher polys without running out of RAM and forcing virtual memory swapping on the hard drive (which slows everything down). Or it may be time to start thinking of a new computer
must say the clouds/moon and typo settings work not together with
the blender rendering. both show a different style. and the yellow
area distracts me. just the color only.
otherwise this poster is kick ass great. first i thought it was from
a professional film ad.
First off, thanks a lot for all the (positive) feedback, just keep’em coming
And don’t hold back if you have any (constructive) critiques!
@Robertt: Someone had to get it…you’ve captured one of the main problems I had during the postpro of this pic. The perspective of the clouds and the render is totally off, but somehow I managed to hide that pretty well…
I didn’t want to re-render as that would probably have ruined the whole setting and lighting setup, I might be wrong but in the end I felt that it wouldn’t be toooo obvious…
And I think that my computer only lacked RAM. I bought it last fall, actually because I have decided to spend more time with 3d modelling. I have a pretty good Video Card (as I think) with 256 MB VRAM, the modelling itself was not…fast…but at least it was possible. The rendering was the main problem - 1024 MB RAM were not enough @_@
Everytime I tried to render in a bigger size (this one was rendered at 1200x1200) or in less pieces blender crashed.
@cekuhnen: Now that you and Robertt mention it…it really looks a bit like a movie poster…
Also, thanks for the input about the clouds, I haven’t thought about something like that yet.
If someone actually wants to see this at a bigger size, I also have a 1600x2600 version of this as I always like to work at double size…but I don’t know if the details still look good at that size ^^;
It looks great. My only real crit is that, as your description. The area looks virtually dead. It doesn’t even seem the machines are still running. No lights or leds or any of the other pretties that we humans love to add to everything to make it look pretty, or for safety reasons.
I think more lights in the setting to indicate general areas of activity would help to keep the impression that the machines are still going, even when there’s no one alive in the area.
Great, thanks again for the input…I’ll try to use your tips and thoughts for my next works. @Mifune + camel - you’ve got two other points I was not quite sure about. I know, Lighting and Materials could be better and more dramatic. But to be honest, especially the materials were driving me crazy - the scene was just too complex for me and I need to find a better way of organizing my work. But hey, I’m still learning something new every day
And about the darkness: many people are arguing about it, some of them say make it a little bit brighter, others tell me, no, leave it like that. So, personally, on my monitor it looks perfect, just as I wanted it. I’ll try to get a view from another monitor today…but I guess I won’t change it, as I’ve already tested a brightness adjustement and even though the change was very minor, I noticed it…
