I don’t know if any of you know what this is, but I found this in my house and it was my dad’s when he was growing up. It can add, subtract, and Multiply. Somehow I understand this old technology. My modeling part is almost done and I don’t know where to go.
I have two ways that I can think of:
I can Model all of the print on the calc to make it look new, or
I can scan the front of my calc in and UV map it to get a worn look.
Well here is the picture. The materials are just colors to tell the difference while modeling.
IMO, it would look better if you try to give it a worn look, but modelling it new and texturing, not just scanning it. It looks good, maybe you could try both ways too and see wich one turns out better!.
Fig1 > In your image, it looks as though the face plate (the white surface) and the body (the red surface) or one peace. If you look at your reference picture you can notice that they are two.
Fig2 > This also looks like you painted or UV mapped the numbers on. I think what would make your image look more photo is to model each whole for the numbers and to place a plane behind each whole. Then UV map the numbers to the plain. This would allow for the shadows.
All in all, your image is looking good. I am sure when it comes to texturing, you will be on spot with it. I rely like that drum image you created and I thought you did a really good job texturing it.
I like your idea. This looks like a fun project. I use to have one of the magic brain calculators when I was a kid (80’s.) Keep up the good work.
Atariman: Thanks a lot for the figures. I’ll get to fixing the first one right away. The second one has no UV mapping. Actually, i haven’t UVmapped at all on the model yet. There is a white plane behind the medal covering with black Text 0’s right above it but from your comment, i am going to move the plane and text back to make it look more realistic. Thanks again.
Edit:
I think i just fixed what Atariman said, but there is no shadows because there is only one hemi lighting the scene for now. Any more crits before I move onto texturing?
Prolly will use YafRay for final but just finding out how I can make it look in blender. BTW, does anybody know where I can find out how to use a bumpmap in YafRay?
DreamMaster: I started to write something here to explain it but i was confused on how to use it when i wrote it so here’s a link if you want to know how to use it. http://www.dotpoint.com/xnumber/Magic_Brain.htm
That reminds me. I need to add some more numbers, back to blending.
