I was using blender when it suddenly stopped while i was working with fire. I looked at the task manager, saw that its memory usage dropped to around 30MB, and immediately realized, what was happening next was not good. 10 seconds later, it crashed. I tried reopening it, but had a horrible greeting to an error: “Missing DNA Block.” i tried reopening it again, but knew all was lost. everything i had been working on was gone, and had to be due by 12/7. I came here looking for experts who knew about this error, and if there was any way to fix it. if you need me to link the corrupted .blend file, please ask. there are no .blend1, .blend2, etc. files.
What kind of work? Baking the simulation? Rendering?
What is your operating system? What is the amount of RAM that you have?

the fire was free baking itself when it froze. i dont remember if it was cause by changing my viewport shading.
I have Windows 10, with 4GB DDR2 ram. i need a new computer lol
I have seen that video, but nothing there helped me
One last trick when .blend don’t open is to create a new file and try to append data from it, you may recover objets.
But anyway , sorry but I’m curious, how comes that you don’t have any .blend1 ?
Also , you should have auto-saves , unless you have restarted the computer and the OS wiped it (like on linux)
I have tried creating a new blender file and appending, but the corrupted .blend file wont even open. And I don’t know why i dont have autosaves enabled, or why i don’t have any .blend1 files. i enabled it, but the settings got wiped for some reason
Hum, sorry then I think you just need to start over, I guess this is how we learn how much backup is important !
but cant i append the needed dna block myself? copying the needed section from the file to the other? or fix the header and footers?
I do not understand why the file can be corrupted while working with Blender if you did not intentionally try to save the file. As I understand it, there is no option for autosave overwriting original .blend file.
Just in case, have you tried deleting the files generated for the simulation cache?
Here is more about how to set incremental saving for save versions:

With that small amount of RAM you should use Windows 7 or a light Linux distro.
eh, it gets me around
how do i do that?
i know how to do this, the settings were just wiped fsr
If you have not configured a location for the cache, default location is a folder containing cache name that is created in the same path where you have your .blend file.
Did you check if there is enough disk space where you have Blender installed or where you save the .blend file?
