major problems importing paths

Hi, I’ve been using blender here and there for a few months and have yet to fully figure out how to get paths from illustrator to properly import. Currently I type my text in illustrator, convert the text to an outline, and save as an SVG 1.0. In Blender I can import it and sometimes it will look good from the get go, but then (in order to be able to extrude it) I convert it to a poly curve, and then to a mesh. At this point, usually at least half the faces have dissappeared from the text. Normally I can just recreate the easy ones, like Ts and Ls and Is, but now I’ve got a B to recreate and it’s more time consuming than just making the text from scratch it seems. I know there must be a way to accurately import paths from illustrator but I’m not getting it, any help would greatly be apprecaited, I really need to learn how to do this right, thanks!

I found a useful tip of using “Ctrl+a” before extruding but this was for gimp and inkscape paths, maybe this will help you?

I didn’t have any luck with ctrl+a, does anyone else have any suggestions? I could really use the advice of a seasoned user, thanks!
