Making an object thicker

I feel extremely stupid for having to post this on a forum to figure it out, but here’s the deal. I have a simple model of the beginning part of a paint filter. I want to make it look like each stretch of it is thicker, while retaining an overall 1.4 to 1 ratio. Every time I scale each of the stretches up and change the ratio, it looks like it did before. Can someone help me overcome my stupidity?

Thicker on the Z-axis? Or Y-Axis?

Either way:

The first thing is to apply the scale on your original object. Select it, in object mode and press Ctrl-A and Apply Scale. (This is likely what was causing most of your problems)

Then add an empty, scale it up by whatever proportions you want, here I did 1:1:1.4. You may be referring to 1:1.4:1 which I don’t have pictured, but will work as well.

Then go back to the curve object, and add an array modifier. Use the empty as the object offset.
