Making modifiers affect only one object

Hello people.
This is my first post here :). I am a total newbie but eager to learn Blender.
I have just faced a problem I couldn’t solve.
After having applied some modifiers (Mirror, Solidify, Subdivision surface) to an object, I try to add a simple cube but the previous modifiers are affecting it. I tried to exclude the cube from the modifiers in many ways but unfortunately I couldn’t.
Do you happen to have any idea on how to overcome this?

You may have added the new object while you were in edit mode, making it part of the same object which had the modifiers. Always add new objects in object mode.
