Making simple game props- video tutorial

I wanted to make a quick tutorial on how to use photos to create simple props for a Blender game. Using a single photo from google images you can make and texture a low poly prop model.

Here’s the tutorial. Hope it is helpful.

I have the free version of fraps, so I could only record in 30 second bursts, so I had to be quite hurried in my instructions. Watch it a couple of times to get the most information.

Good job. This was very useful
Guru like:yes:

great. Really.

very nice! the only thing i could see changing would be getting a better mic

Nice tut.

If you look for other free screen recorder:
CamStudio is quite good

Really nice tut.

I use Camtasia, its perfect. But it cost about 160 dollars, but its worth.

Thanks all, I tryed cam studio, but I can’t get a good framerate at anything above 640*480 pixels.
Also I couldn’t get it to record the game engine runtimes.

I may pay for a full fraps at some point in the future, but for now it’s OK to stich together 30 second clips. Keeps me more focused.

The Mic issue was because it was 1AM and I live in a one bedroom apartment in Korea with paper thin walls. Didn’t want to wake my neighbors.^^

Hmm, well done, but I wouldn’t encourage noobs to start grabbing images off the net, most of them will have copyrights. I would recommend instead just doing the same thing but off CGTextures?
Good job anyways.

Most learners won’t be making a commercial game, so it’s fine for them to use any textures/image they like. It’s for educational uses after all.
Of course I suggest every budding game designer should invest in a good digital camera and go out and find things to photograph and model for your games.

Even if your prop did end up in a game you can justifiably claim that it is sufficiently altered from the original as to be an original art work. If you are really worried you could do things like combining two sources (the table from one picture and the table legs from a second picture) As long as it didn’t display any prominent trademarks or logos you’d be in the clear. However, if you use a 3d model or hand drawn concept art (like from deviant art or such) it would be good to credit the original artist to avoid accusations of stealing.
