mapping procedural textures to path

hi

I’m new to this forum, and hope someone can give me a hint. it’s quite likely that the question is in here somewhere allready, but i could not find it.
What i try to do is making some piping by using a curve and than assign a circle as bevel object to the curve. Simple. Then i want a kind of stripy texture to follow the curve, so the tube shows rings following aligned at 90 degr to the path of the pipe. for this I create a ‘wood’ texture. But how do i map the texture so that it follows the curve in a nice way? i can’t figure it out. Can anybody help me please?

If you want to do this:

It’s easy… In the material buttons you map the texture as Flat, Cube or anything you like… Then just a little bit bellow, there are three rows of buttons which say xyz etc. These are to help you switch the x,yz, coordinates of your texture… Have all the x buttons pressed (this is what makes the trick for you…)… You may have to set SizeX=2.00, SizeY=2.00 SizeZ=2.00

Spyros.

<EDIT>You can also have your texture mapped as yyy… It gives you a similar effect… Just don’t try zzz, or any other combination of x,y,z… It won’t work… “Play” a little bit with the other settings until you get the best resault…

I hope it helps you a bit…

thanx for the swift response, but i had figured this myselfe sofar. But this is how it comes out with me. the mapping us unanware of the path, and ignores its alignment.

Can’t see your image.
Anyway because I just wanted to post. Here is my way of doing it.
Used an image texture with default settings, but should work with procedural textures too. The point is the UV/orco button in the edit buttons for the path.

If you are using a procedural material, you may also need to adjust the XXXYYYZZZ buttons in the bottom center of the Materials buttons window. I did a test and needed to set these to XXX to get this effect with the wood texture set to Bands.

Ohh… I see… I missed the part where you said you want the stripes to be at right angles with the curve path… sorry…

My way works very good and has the desired resault with Meshes like Cylinders for example…

But the problem with curves is that neither their x nor their y axis is all the time at right angles with the curve path…

This is best illustrated at the example below:

http://www.illusion-digital.com/wip/axis.jpg so if you map it along the y axis (that’s what the yyy selection roughly means…) and you take a look at the direction of the stripes in my other pic in my previous post, you’ll understand why this happens…

Do you get the picture why you can’t easily get the effect you want???

That’s why your stripes don’t get to be at 90 degrees angle with the path…

I think tordat’s approach, is the best (if not the only…) way to deal with this problem…
