Mariella (NSFW, nudity)

(The above screenshot is the current status of the project.)

I am designing a character. And I want your opinion on the anatomy and/or overall design. I’m going for a somewhat cartoon (anime inspired) style here. I’m making this character for a small video game.

Any suggestions?

Pretty good so far. I like the design of the face and hair.

As for anatomy:

  • Move everything above the hips backward a bit, unless she’s got bad posture and is supposed to be slouching.
  • I think the neck would look better if it were a bit thinner from the front view (matching the side view).
  • The kneecaps seem a bit too pointy or protruding too far forward - maybe both? And the knees should be a little higher on the leg. Also, the bulge at the sides of the knee joints should be more closely aligned with the kneecaps (they’re too low currently).

Hope that helps!

  • Fixed the posture
  • Made the neck thinner from the front view
  • And fixed issues with the leg
  • Also tweaked the hair.

Looking good… keep it up. :+1:

Does her abdomen look right?

I don’t see any serious issues with the abdomen. But these images don’t really help much in evaluating that area… there’s a lack of various angles on that portion of the body, along with somewhat flat lighting and shading.

The main thing that stands out to me as a little off are the breasts. They look kind of square… in my experience they tend to be more rounded. :smirk:
They also seem too far apart.

But again, with stylized character designs there can be quite a bit of variance from realistic form and what is considered normal or functional. So I might be wrong on these points, depending on your artistic intent.

I did the best I can with the breasts. They’re meant to be small (which may’ve resulted in the aforementioned issue.)

As for the abdomen, I think there’s something wrong in the area between her upper thigh and her stomach.

By the way, I wasn’t really sure how to put better shading or put better lighting. It might be due to the area being flat in the first place.
Given that I’m going for something that is anime-inspired, this model should at least have some sort of resemblance to the medium.

The breasts look much better. I assumed they were supposed to be small… just looked like the wrong shape and spacing.

The abdomen/stomach does look somewhat flat, and that may account for the shading being a bit hard to read. I wold suggest to move the slight bulge it does have a little higher… either aligned with the belly button or just above.

Excuse the late reply, but I was busy.
Nonetheless, given that Mariella has a thin body overall, I don’t think there’s an issue with her abdomen in its current form.

I’ve looked at references (real-life and anime) and I don’t think there’s anything to fix. It looks fine to me.

Cool. Looking forward to the next phase. :+1:

Even if there’s any further issues with anatomy, I’m moving on.

Does the topology look decent? I think the front’s ok, but the back is a mess.

Not too bad. But you’re right, it could be cleaned up a bit, esp. in the back.

The biggest change I would recommend is to alter the edge loop from the nose tip to go down the cheek and around the mouth, instead of back toward the ear (maybe the mid-nose loop also?).

See the image search results here for good examples.

Current topology.

Lookin’ good.

I’m going to make some tweaks to the base mesh, and then add arms.

Now working on hands. I will get to the arms soon.

I’m going to modify the topology for the palms.

Now that I finally connected all parts together, I’m gonna open up now for any more tips, or advice to make further tweaks.

Is the topology alright? How about the model itself?

Current progress

I must give credit to Daniel Kreuter for providing the reference I used:

I recommend that you focus on all the joints, they seem to be the weakest areas in your progress model.

They are very well defined in the ref images.
