MASSIVE mothership

built to house the smaller attach ships I made. one of the images has an armature so you can see the scale of it (its where the purple dot is in the last image)!! the idea is that the attack ships fly into the back of the mothership, then reverse out. next step is to get some basic materials. crits please.

I saw your previous artwork 4 days ago and found your another new one today. Your ships both look pretty good and it’s very fast. I can’t do that so fast. I wonder if there’re some techniques.

I wonder if there’re some techniques

i usualy go for ‘quick and dirty’ modelling, because i intend to animate it all it doesnt have to be hyper-detailed. I also dont tend to go for low-poly stuff, i use as many as i need to keep going quickly. the one thing you will find is that some of the meshes arent very clean.

good eye for detail @… I like the overall comlexity of your models.

thanks for the replies. ive added some basic materials on the hull, and made some windows. at the moment its gonna have 5 floors (including the bridge). more images attached - one cuttaway so you can see how it fits together.

How did you do the wirframe thingies sticking out of the fuel tank (don’t know the english word for them)

Your render looks good - not sure about the colour choice of the main hull. musk…I think you’re asking about the “structural engineered truss” thingies. Lightweight and strong

the grid truss things were my usual bodge, just a load of scaled cylinders at angles. you cant tell cos they arent seen close up. i made one cross, then copied it and so on. its really quick when you have one section modeled. i’ll do a mini tut after the weekend if you want. and the hull colour will change.

Make it bigger. If you state MASSIVE mothership then it needs to be obscenely large. Very nice attention to detail though, I will like to see the finished product.

its always hard to tell how big something is when its not compared to another object, so if you’re saying “its not massive” then i guess you should probably wait until he gets nearer to completion or possibly put another spaceship next to it…like a ship that would dock into this one

Kevin: he has, see render #1 and then this thread about the smaller ship
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=101936

No need to do the tutorial just for me I have an Idea how you made the truss but thanks anyway, but maybe others in the community will like to have one.
How well does your technique hold up when you get very close to the trusses?

thanks for the replies guys.

@musk, i will do a close up render when i have a chance.
@lotrf, yeah, that small ship is designed to seat 2 in comfort, i suppose maybe 4.

should be more progress later today - i have been away for the weekend which is why there werent any updates

heres a close up of the trusses (not a render tho)

The greebles look fake and done by a script but maybe when you texture them they will look more realistic.

yeah i will do them by hand later but i wanted some quick reference so i had an idea what it would look like. anyone have any views/ideas about propusion? its meant to have a nuclear reactor, but i dunno where to put the outputs/jets. pods on the side is one option, any others?

an animation of the small ship comming out the back. I will sort the greebles and propulsion and landing gear tommorow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHM1B4F8Jhc its squashed horizontally cos it was rendered as 16:9 and it isnt displayed that way - sorry

a really nice amount of detail for an object made to an animation!
