I’m currently using a matcap for checking for bumps on a car’s body, however I was wondering if there was a better material out there that I could use which’ll be more sensitive to bumps in a mesh??

while editing blender has a builtin matcap (not a node or a texture) you can assign it trough the main 3D view right top click on + there control to shading
Other option create a small viewport and set it to cycles or BI with some glossy materal, keep view small for quick updates.
