I was wondering if Blender has something akin to 3dsmax’s Material Id’s, where each material, or even mesh faces can be given material ID’s for effects in post or something.
Can vertext weighting be used to apply a different material only to a certain part of a mesh?
1- yes, materials can have an id. Scroll down in the material properties panel. You may need to include the materials id in the render passes panel.
2- no, but you can convert a vertex weight into a vertex paint and use the last one through the “attribute” node. Look for the “weigth2vertexcol” addon.
