Material options different to those in tutorials using the same version of Blender

Hello,

I’m trying to follow a few tutorials on making metallic materials but the options that the tutorials have under a new material are very different to mine.

I have Blender 2.71 on Mac, when I make a new material I have the following options:

Diffuse
Specular
Shading
Transparency
Mirror
Subsurface Scattering
Strand
Options
Shadow
Custom Properties

But every tutorial I view has the following options:

Custom Properties
Preview
Surface
Displacement
Settings

It’s like I have different version of Blender or something, but I currently have the latest version and I’ve never seen the above options through various old versions that stretch long before those tutorials I’m viewing.

I’m sure the answer is simple and embarrassing but I’m really stuck here!

Thanks!

It’s not a different version of blender, it’s a different render engine. At the top of the blender interface you can select the renderer. You are using ‘Blender Render’, the tutorial is using ‘Cycles Render’.

Ah! Thank you so much, yes that’s done it. It’s so hard to search for the answers to problems like these, as the cause can be obscured in many layers of the user’s ignorance, like mine here!
