I’ve got some questionable troubleshooting with the material preview window in material properties.
This small cute preview is constantly crashing blender, without any crash text or something. When I try to preview any glass material, blender is crashing instantly. I had one file I couldn’t open anymore, because of this problem. But it happens only on my workstation for some reason.
Is there any settings for this window or can I overall disable this Preview?
If the material preview crashes, trying to render will also crash. It’s a canary in the coal mine, in a way. Currently your workstation will crash if you try to do anything with glass materials, so your focus should actually be figuring out why and fixing that.
Crashing is not part of normal functionality, so that’s a bug and you should report it. Before reporting any bug you should make sure your system matches minimum requirements and that your GPU drivers are up to date. Update your GPU drivers manually anyway just in case. That really solves issues very often.
You could also try changing Display Graphics Backend:
I would try both OpenGL and Vulkan to see if that makes a difference. If this ended up solving the issue, it would be great to report the bug to the devs.
Thx but you didn’t get my point. Its not the big preview, it is the small one in the picture. This thing is failing any glass material. Render is not the problem.
Its happen in every file, even in empty files. I can’t use the small Preview in Material Properties for any shader with transmission.
I understand that is the tiny material preview that crashes when you unfold that panel. The thing is the arrow that you marked as “WORKS FINE” when you enable that one, blender still is NOT using Cycles yet, that’s why I asked you if you could click on the next icon with Cycles enabled to see if blender crashes as well.
