Material Textures vs UV Textures.

So whats your take on Material textures and UV Textures on Hard-surface models such as guns? Good or bad? You decide! im working on a project and i need ideas and advice on texturing. thanks!

it depends on various things. if it’s a brand new gun, procedural textures will work fine. if it’s old and dinged up, or has a gnurled grip(requiring a carefully positioned normals map), UV texturing would be appropriate. btw, I made a good bump map for a gnurled texture by adding a pyramid shape, giving it an array modifier ( 2 of them actually ) and then solidifying the array, and baking the normals to a plane. It looks very convincing.
