Is it possible to give more objects the same material?

Of course, why not?
For Blender 2.5x
-> Select the object
-> Go to materials
-> Click on the round icon left of the New (material) button to select an excisting material
Is that of any help or did you mean something else?
Oh yea sorry.
I still work with 2.49b.
If I try to change the material link, it names it name.001 because it already exists.
i think this will help:
on the shaders tab on materials next to add new theres alittle symbol(looks like 2 arrow heads 1 pointing up 1 down) then choose the material
