Materials and Textures for Character Animations

Hello,

I teach a high school class. The students have sculpted and re-topologized their own characters for a character animation. I plan on teaching the game engine later, but our work is for character animation.

I see many methods of applying materials and textures online for characters. Can someone let me know what the “standard” is for applying materials and textures to characters? Should I be focusing on teaching texture painting, UV mapping, another method?

I know that UV mapping is used for game engine, but is it typically used for character animations?

I’ve introduced cycles, and ideally I’d like animations to be rendered with cycles shaders. Is this a bad idea? Should I stick with Blender Render?

My class runs on:
Blender 2.6b
Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
8GB Memory 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

Thanks so much for the advice. I don’t want to be teaching my students outdated methods.

UV mapping / texture painting is highly recommended for characters of any kind. You may wish to start by making procedural materials and textures and baking them to your UV coords though, Saves a lot of time and guess work. But mainly, yes, teach them UV mapping for sure.

Thanks so much for the advice. I’m clueless when it comes to UV Mapping and texture painting. Could you point me to resources available for free online? Especially for procedural materials and textures and baking them to your UV coords .

Thanks again!

  1. Google search: “Blender UV mapping tutorial” (118,000) results)

  2. Check out CG Cookie Blender tutorials

Gee thanks for your wonderful insight, Sabba. Get a life jerk! I’ve never encountered this type of response on this really helpful online community.

Very helpful! Thanks Orinoco

If you have never encountered someone suggesting you do a web search instead of asking others to do it for you, perhaps it is time you should. Also, I know that you can join CG Cookie for $, but many of their tutorials are free… and they also have a search function on their site.

Peace,
Bill

@sabba, while BlenderArtists doesn’t have a DBAD rule, in general, if all you have to say is ‘google is your friend’ or RTFM, then you might consider not posting. Your second bit of advice wasn’t too bad, but, considering it came after that first bit of snark, it kind of lost its impact, since you ruined your 'I’m just trying to help" credibility with the “google” item.

Cheers,
Orinoco
