materials to picture textures

Just a quick and hopefully simple question. How do you apply a material inclusive of textures excetera to a black/greyscale image so that this picture can then be used as a texture? Basicly I have a gimp image and am trying to make a silver hallmark on a glass.
Thanks in advance.

In the Map to tab, for your image texture, click the NoRGB button and then set the Color to Black, White, or Grey depending on the effect you want.

Ok I could do that bit before I meant can you apply a full material to it for example wood, sorry for not making myself clearer.
The other problem I had is I’m getting two of my image mapped to my glass. I am using clip and have all other buttons in map image off and havn’t accidentally copied the texture, I cant think what else it could be.
Thanks again.

Sorry I am not understanding what you want to do. Are you trying to create a stencil so that your image texture only appears on a small part of the object? Can you attach and image of what you are currently getting with some notes about what you want to change?

'S ok I’v got it sorted now, thanks anyway.
