Maya Rendering Woes...

So technically it’s not Blender, but this still seemed like the best place to put it. I downloaded Maya PLE to mess around with and did the first animation tutorial in Mastering Maya 7. The thing is, I set the render quality for my animation to production quality, and the final animation looks anything but. Seems noisy to me, as well as huge render artifacts going on. Anybody who uses Maya know what’s going on?

PS Flame me for saying it, but at a glance and after using it for a bit, Maya does look like a better program than Blender.

Ive only dabbled with Maya, just some things to check.
Anti-aliasing
Compression
Colour depth
There should be a way to set these in your render preferences.

I’m downloading your video now … will be “awhile” on dialup, but are you talking about effects other than the gigantic watermarks all over the renders …as well as the 3d viewports :frowning: ? I don’t even bother trying to get an exceptional render from Maya PLE with the huge watermarks present, there ARE a lot of free character rigs available for Maya though.

If you want to experiment with other software, I’d suggest either the XSI or Max 30 day trials, there are no renderMarks …albeit of course the software only runs for 30 days. There is also a Houdini learning edition, which only has a small(er) watermark in the bottom corner, though the renders are limited to 640x480.

Yes, other than the watermarks. The animation is of a hammer putting a nail in, and there is a horrible ghosting effect on the hammer. Almost looks like DupliFrames would in Blender. Anyway, you’ll see when it finishes downloading. praying for God to drop a cable modem in your lap. Tell me if it works.

there ARE lots of free character rigs available for Blender. Enjoy paying for Maya and its technical support. And enjoy paying for a PC with about twice the horsepower as needed for Blender. I have used Maya, yes it has a very different UI, and simple stuff is simpler maybe, or more intuitive than Blender, but the complicated meshes and materials, both are as complex to use. And really, our QuickStart is just like Maya, and just as long. The windows and icons are not so newbish in Blender, imho.

Ok, I looked at it, and in Windows Media pLayer 9 it looks like a mess and as you describe, but when I played it in VLC or Virtual Dub it looks fine, I don’t see any artifacts or any “ghosting” effects . So it appears to be WMPlayer not understanding the (cvid) codec you used.

The main reason I want to get familiar with Maya is because I want to go into the industry someday, and that’s what is used. I’m not bashing Blender, I’m just saying it’s not as good as its commercial alternative yet. As far as the interface, you may say more noobish, I say more intuitive. Anyway, I don’t want this to degrade into a flame war… To be fair, I love Blender’s hot key system.

[Edit] Thanks Mike, I’ll try playing it in QuickTime in a minute…

[Edit 2] Works like a charm!
