Maya to Blender Animation Workflows

A little more indepth than the previous tutorial. This is for Maya animators who wanted to learn Blender, or Blender artists who are curious how Maya does stuff… ask questions! Poke holes! I’m here to help!

I cover quite a bit in this tutorial… here’s a TOC:

Blender Unbake script: http://tinyurl.com/unbake
Thanks to Liero: http://blenderartists.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-221387.html
Blender 2.6 keyboard shortcuts: http://angelo-themovie.in/images/documents/Blender_2.6-_shortcuts.pdf
Tween Machine for Maya: http://www.justinanimator.com/mel-tweenMachine.php

We’re using Blender 2.68a (http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.68/) and using Maya 2014 (http://www.autodesk.com/products/autodesk-maya/free-trial)

thanks for the info, I’m not into maya so that was really useful! some little comments though: instead of baking modified curves and then unbaking with script I think you could just run blender ‘bake action’ operator, you’ll still need to simplify curves later… ‘motion trail’ addon allowed to edit paths in the 3d viewport but I don’t think it’s been updated for a while, if you prefer dupliframing as a cheat for ghosting then use drivers: type #frame-15 and #frame+15 for start and end values… also check the psl-snapshot-script… and thanks again for sharing

Hey,

Firstly, well done on making a nicely presented video. As someone who has never really seen/touched/used Maya in practice for animating, it was interesting seeing just exactly how we stack up against in for such tasks.

A few comments:

  • The “Paste Keyframes” tool actually has quite a few options for how you can use it, though these are admittedly quite hidden. To show these, press F6 in the Graph Editor to get a panel showing the various options. From memory, one of the modes there probably does what Maya does, though I’d have to check again to be sure.

  • The problems with the Pose Libraries UI are perhaps a bit too overdone. That’s now on my todo to be checked on when I get some time…

Cheers,
Aligorith
