McLuhan's Curse

I’m not in the habit of naming my sketches, but I knocked this little one out while I was taking a break from working on other projects and it kind of named itself.

For those of you who don’t get the reference, the name refers to Marshall McLuhan… the guy first came up with the concept that “the medium is the message.” I don’t agree with a lot of his logic, but this seemed to me to illustrate a lot of what he was saying.

Thoughts?

This is a cool drawing, I like it a lot. The camera does not seem to be pointing at the guy, or is it just my eyes deceiving me?

Marshall McLuhan is an icon, he also coined the term “global village”. I read a few books by former pupils of his, interesting stuff:

The Skin of Culture: Investigating the New Electronic Reality; Derrick de Kerckhove

The Fifth Language: Learning a Living in the Computer Age; Robert K. Logan

I imagine that man yelling, “Pies! We made pies!”
For this reason, was he cursed?
A sad day indeed, when a man is cursed for pie-making…

pretty good.

The camera is supposed to be pointing at the guy. However, I skewed the perspective a lot in this sketch, so things may or may not look exactly as they were intended.

Haha! Actually, the idea is based on McLuhan’s premise that as we are exposed to more types of media, they become extensions of ourselves… an integral part of our very being. They stretch us thin, overwhelm, unite, and separate us in positive and negative ways. However, once exposed, the detaching of any of those extensions is both difficult and painful. That’s kinda what I was getting at with this.

And I think the drawing conveys that to a “T”. A concept I hope you continue to extrapolate… a future Blender work perhaps?

very nice drawing,i like details and the perspective of the body.

Perhaps. We’ll have to see if I can squeeze it in amongst my other projects :D.

Thanks!
